Disengaged steering wheel from steering S70

I tried to adjust the position of the steering wheel, its hight and the length of the column. I pulled it towards myself after I moved the lever that allows the adjustmet.

I tried to steer....the wheel appeared disengaged. The steering wheel "freewheels" without engaging the steering. It goes round and round without slightest resistance. It does not move the wheels or catch anything in the steering. To my utmost surprise and dismay. From second to second my car became inoperational.

There was no click or clunk, I did not overcome any resistence, I broke nothing (did not hear/feel anything breaking, snapping or letting way). I plainly tried to adjust the position of the steering wheel. (Of course, I was not driving when performing the maneuver.)

When I lock the car with the key, the steering wheel finds a locked position (or does not on occasion and freewheels all around before it locked later). After I unlock the car and start the engine my hope was the steering would engage. Nope.

Any suggestions?

This should be pretty easy, I guess elementary...but it is not for me.

Thank you a lot

Welcome to the forum nehopsa.

Alot of 'Interstate auto auction' cars have issues.
This steering disengagement should not have happened.
I wonder ifyour carwas in an accident and the colomn wasn't repaired. You may have done yourself a lifesaving favor.
Call them and bring this extreme safety issue to their attention.

Thank you for reply. According to carfax the car was not in accident. I let a mechanic look at the car. He said the previous owner must have tinkered with the steering. It was not put together properly.

The tinkering also started IRS light.

The steering is OK now. I want to get rid/junkthe car shortly so I did not do IRS.
