Engine Rumble at Idle

Okay, new member compelled to join because of this stupid noise. Hopefully you can help-

Have a 98 S70 T5 with 160K miles. I've had it for just over a year and put 20K on it with more or less no problems except a new radiator. Drives great.

Except . . . lately I have been getting this weird rumbling/grinding noise at low RPM and idle. It is very hard to explain, but I will try . . . it is usually intermittent, almost soundsl ike a coffee maker working, with no rythm or pattern. It's just a low rumble. When it is real bad, it will be almost continuous. HOwever, when I get going, it either goes away altogether, or I just can't hear it anymore. I'm also feeling it as a rumble in the brake pedal and steering wheel, but not the clutch. THe noise/vibration seem to be the worst after the car is warmed up, like if I come to a stop after having been on the freeway.

Also, and this seems strange to me, the noise will continue for a second or two after I turn the ignition off.

Any help would be appreciated. I am fairly ignorant when it comes to auto repair, so the simpler the better.

Thanks

RE: Engine Rumble at Idle

I just purchased a 99 S70 GLT with about 118k miles on it and I think I noticed the beginnings of this issue driving it yesterday. The noise seems to be coming from the drivers side, and it does sound like a coffee maker. Mine only does it right when Ive come to a complete stop and then goes away in 2-3 seconds. Never hear it when the car is moving.

Was your engine mounts your problem?

I have this problem as well and tech suggested to me earlier that it may be the brake booster. Still think it is just have not taken the initiative to replace it yet.

Just FYI.

RE: Engine Rumble at Idle

One time at at stop light I heard some rumbling noises from the hood area...Green light and started driving noise wasn't audible anymore...got to work and was walking away from car and notice the hood was not shut all the way..slammed it shut and never heard that sound anymore..chalked it up to the hood causing the sound. Sometimes it's something very simple. (my right motor mount is new, replaced alongwith the timing belt).
