Smoke Emitting from Steering Column

Smoke Emitting from Steering Column
Every now and again, when I start my car smoke comes out of the steering column until I turn off the car. When I turn on the car again, no smoke. Everything continues to work fine even after the burning, which does not make sense whatsoever. I use my car multiple times a day, but this has only happened 5 times within the past 2 months. Nothing was obviously burnt when I took off the covers to try to have a look.
Anyone had or heard of something like this happening?
Bonus: Picture of my car on an airstrip.

Have you had any problems with the ignition switch? Such as the key getting stuck, or some of the "clicks" not feeling the way they should? The switches are known to fail on these cars... I've never seen one smoke, but it's a possibility. Suggestion: leave the column covers off, and next time you see the smoke, try to see what part it comes from. The switch is a gray, round piece attached by 2 screws on the left side of the column, below the turn signal switch.
