Rough Engine Idle/ETS Codes
 

So I was fooling around with my car, 1999 S70 219,000 miles, and I tried taking the black cover off the electronic throttle body (I read that it comes off and you can clean inside of it). When I pried on it and it wouldn't come off, I decided it wasn't a good idea and so I stopped and bolted it back up.

Now my engine idles very roughly at about 1,000-1,1000 rpms, and the check engine light is on throwing every throttle body code it has. I'm so lost now. I must have broken something inside of it and now I can't drive it at all and it's very frustrating obviously.

At first, when I started the car it would shoot up to over 2,000 rpms then drop to 1,000 and idle roughly at that, now it just starts up and idles like hell.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to try replacing it.

I am having the same problem. The Throttle body is software driven at the dealer. I would say get a new one, and have it programed by the dealer. Sounds like more harm than good was done here.

Do you know how much that would cost? And where can I find a new throttle body?

I am thinking about just pulling one from a junkyard since I have so many miles on the car anyway.

Sorry, don't know from personal experience, but read that the ETM has to be programmed at the dealer for your car; i.e. you'll still need to spend $$$ at the dealer to get your junkyard part re-programmed.

Do some searching, thought there was a company that rebuilt these and lots of folks have had good luck with them...

Well I did some research and called a shop that only works on Volvos and the guy told me that I can't put a used throttle system in because once they are programmed for one car, that's it. It will only ever work for that car. Sounds sketchy, but oh well.

He told me for labor and parts I'm looking to spend just under $1000. Sooooo... that's that.

Just for future reference: the black cover on the throttle body IS NOT SUPPOSED TO COME OFF. DON'T take it off. I feel like a fool. ha

Good to know! Sorry it happened to you, but I'm glad I know not to mess with it now! I've thought about trying to take it off at least 5 times, when cleaning the throttle body, so I'm glad I haven't gotten around to doing it!

In 1999 Volvo started putting the Electronic Throttle Controls on those cars which are a pain in the rear from all I have read about them.
