S70 problem, please help.

Hey guys. Hoping to get a little help here. 2 months ago I bought a used S70 from an old couple who owned the car since new. Car looked new inside and out. I couldnt believe the condition it was in. During the test drive it ran very well. I havent driven it much since I bought it. Less than 200 miles. The car has 170,000 on it.

Now the problem. Every once in awhile it would sputter at highway speeds. Also every once in awhile while trying to accelerate to pass it seemed sluggish, like it just didnt want to get up and go. I didnt think much of it as I was still getting accustomed to the car. Then last week while driving doan the highway at 75mph it sputtered a few times again. Then suddenly it just lost all power. I had no get up and go at all. No matter how hard I pressed the gas it just had no power. I managed to limp off the busy 4 lane highway at 15mph and have it towed to my house. The check engine light did come on and also a light with an arrow. I'm not familiar with Volvo at all. I did run the codes. I had several but for the life of me I cant find where I wrote them down but I do remember P1026, P1021 and P1054. There were a couple others. From google searches it seems it could be the ETM, throttle position sensor or maybe the mass airflow sensor. As seen in the picture above it looks like the throttle position sensor and possibly ETM have been replaced at some point.

Basically just hoping to get some more info/advice before I jump in and start replacing stuff. Thanks in advance.

You have to read the codes. There is a light on the dash that reads ETM on the older Volvos.

I ran the codes and posted them in my original post. Not sure how to find them on my dash. Now I'm more confused. Lol

Your codes of P1021 and P1026 suggest an issue with the throttle position sensor and/or the ETM (electronic throttle mechanism). The common culprit in the ETM is either dirty contacts or worn contacts. ARD tuning does sell an ETM contact repair kit or you can have the ETM sent out to a shop for a rebuild (google Volvo ETM rebuild). If you google the P1054 code, it gets a bit more confusing as on some cars that points to an O2 sensor and on others to the coolant temperature being too low. You could start by checking the resistance of the engine coolant temp sensor - cold it should be 2500 ohms give or take, warm (ie engines run at about 190F) that value drops to under 300. I don't think its the O2 sensor as that would show up as a standard P code... My gut says Volvo may have a proprietary code here and its related to the ETM...

See the dealer and have a Volvo rebuilt ETM installed. The other methods simply do not work.
