Default My Car Smokes ... Occassionally

Ok.. I bought this S70 GLT it has 180k miles. When i bought the car it had a smoking problem(so i got it real cheap). The rest of the car was immaculate. The oil separator was full or plugged. (oil around my spark plug wires).

So I disconnected the valve cover breather hose and attatched a hose and filter, low restrictive type. and let hang on the front side of the motor. Also disconnected the hose to the intake side of the turbo and plugged the openning, (I'll install a new separator and hoses later) whalla .. Vitually no smoke .. But now.

About 1 out of 5 times I drive, the car smokes and and almost always but not all the time at stop lights. But when I get going the smoke stops (or at least not visual). Occassionally when getting off the interstate and take my foot off the throttle is puffs some smoke but stops almost immediatly (Valve seals?) but that happens very infrequently.

Could there be residual oil in the intercooler? Valve seals will smoke almost all the time you let of the gas, and rings on acceleration. Vacuum line leaking? Turbo oil seal?

Any ideas?

I own a motorcycle repair shop (25 years) and have worked on motorcycles including turbo bikes and have alot of experience on cars. Just dont want to spend all my weekends chasing smoke ghosts.

I would lean towards a turbo oil leak. I had a '95 Saab 9000 turbo that had similar symptoms, and it was the turbo.

If the vent system is not hooked up correctly it can smoke like that.

Volvos' PCV systems don't work the way most cars do. The valve cover breather hose doesn't just go to the intake hose like on most cars- it goes to the oil trap. The problem you are having is almost certainly a plugged PCV system. Change the whole thing (see FCP Groton for the kit) making sure you clean the ports on the engine block, and see what happens- I'll bet the smoking stops.
