S70 t5..too many problems?
hey everyone
im planning on getting1998 S70 T5 (ignore my sn lol) and its one quick car, ill have to admit. its pretty damn comfortable too, and best of all, its 4 doors, so im not gonnapay a s*it load of money for insurance as i would if it were a coupe. but anyways, ive heard that these cars have had recalls for something i can't remeber now, and the a/c fails you after a while. and can these cars take alot of mileage on them? im getting mine around 100k or so, and i don't wanna buy it if ill have to spend coupl g's to make it run after couple more thousand. thx in advance  |
RE: S70 t5..too many problems?
I haven't heard of anything like that. the 99's had a problem with the electronic throttle control going haywire and having to be fixed but now that volvo is doing that free, it's not a huge deal.
We've had my wife's 99 S70 T5 for 3 years now with zero problems besides the throttle control. I've had my 98 S70 T5 for a couple of months now with zero problems. A guy at volvospeed forums just bought a 98 S70 T5 with 300K miles and it's rock solid. |

my 2000 gtl is running great at 174k miles, i imagine that its gonna last quite awhile longer.

RE: S70 t5..too many problems?
My 94 850 Turbo (basically the same car)blew the engine at 206K and I thought that was quite premature. Never reallly figured out what happened either cause the repair shop offered me $800 for it with a blown engine. In hindsight I would put another engine in it and still be driving it today.

RE: S70 t5..too many problems?
I have '98 T5 with manual transmission. Bought the car in February of 2006, had 108.000 miles on clock. Terrific car, stick shift makes it lot of fun to drive. Was my daily driver until I get sucked into vintage Mercedes diesel world. The car has 135.000 miles on clock now. Biggest problem I had so far wastiming belt pulley at 130K. The belt slipped but fortunately nothing was damaged. Was around $150 to fix. Engine has excellent compression and no oil consumption. I heard these engines can make up to 300K if taken proper care.

Man, reading all this makes me appreciate how durable these Volvos really are. I’ve seen some folks still running their S70s well past 250k miles with just regular maintenance. I’ve actually been debating whether to keep mine or sell it soon — still trying to figure out the Best Place to Sell My Car in NYC without dealing with too many lowball offers. Anyone here have experience selling theirs in the city? Wondering if local listings or online platforms work better for older Volvos.
