S70/V70 Door Panels

Has anyone actually removed or try to remove part labelled 12 on the diagram, from the door panel. If you have, can you post some pointers. I bought a set of T5-SE panels, but the driver door panel isn't as nice as the one I have. I just want to switch the vinyl panel insert witht the leather T5 insert.

I haven't but I think it's just glued in.

cdnbluez 03-08-2011 09:41 AM

I want to remove it from one panel and apply it to another. I'm wondering if it will be re-usable after I peel it off. There is a foam backing on the insert and I think the foam will peel off in places.

The pieces just pop out. I just started prying them out with a flat blade and they came apart easily. They are glued with a green glue, and are not hard to remove. I just did the same thing, removed the vinyl pieces and replaced them with leather. I used 5 minute epoxy to glue them back. I tried a hot glue gun but that did not work. Use some spring clamps and an extra person to help hold while it set up. Be careful not to get the glue on the door pieces.

I glue some things with liquid nail.

volvofl
when you pried them off did any of the foam backing come off?
Did you replace the vinyl ones with used leather ones?

He did not peal the material off the panel, the pulled the panel apart. It's a 2 or 3 piece unit.

What he said. Here are some pic's. I don't think you can take off the material, at least why would you?

I get it now. I was envisioning something totally different. I pulled the rear panel off my car and took the panel off from behind. The front panel looks tougher. You end up removing the liner of the lower door pockets as well.

Where can you get leather panel replacements, and what are the prices like?

cdnbluez 03-11-2011 06:51 AM

Volvo used to sell a kit which is currently discontinued. There is one for sale on ebay. Item number:130493393719
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I bought a set of used panels for $85 that came off either a V70R or a T5-SE, they had the leather on the door panels. The used drivers door panel I bought has alot of gouges along the edges, so I want to use my existing door panel and swap the armrest insert.

Volvofl, when you removed the backside of the front door panels, did you separate everything? I mean to say, did you end up with two pieces, the outer layer and the inner layer. When I look at your photo of the front door panel it looks like there is nothing left on the back. I've aded a link to a photo of the back of my panel, I just want to make before I start ripping it apart. The rears were easy in comparison.

Yep, I just started seperating them, and they came apart. Not too hard.

I paid a lot more for my panels, but they were in perfect shape. Shipping from CA was a lot.

thanks everyone for this. This seems to be a problem with every V70/S70 of this vintage that I've ever seen, including mine.

Gorilla glue works good as well to glue them back together.

Could we pin this thread as a sticky? Agree with drcnnn; includes my S70 too... this project is on my TODO list..

OK, so I went to work on my front door panel, and in the process took some photos.

1. I bought four door panels for my 1998 V70. All 4 door panels in my car have separated in the armrest area. I found a set of V70R or T-5 SE door panels which have leather armrest inserts. They don't separate. The driver panel is in worse shape than the one in my car, so I want to swap the armrest insert.

2. I used a dremel tool to grind the 4 globs of melted plastic used to secure the speaker grill to the door panel. Rear grills are easy to pop out, be careful with the front grills they are brittle and crack easily. When re-installing the speaker grills I just popped them back in, no glue or fasteners. Now I can remove them without removing the door panels.

3. I used a small putty knife and worked it between the two panel pieces, slowly prying them apart. Where the glue has really dried out the two separate easily, but mine had sections where I had to pry them apart slowly so I didn't damage the inner panel.

4. Work the edges.

5. The door pocket assembly, is attached to the armrest and it comes off as one unit.

The Outer Panel

The Inner panel. This is a panel I bought because it has a leather armrest insert. The one in my car is vinyl and separating. My plan is to remove the one from my car, separate it into two pieces, and combine my outer panel with the leather inner panel I bought. I'm doing this because the outer panel from the one I bought has major gouges in it, and the one in my car is quite clean.

6. This is an inner panel from a rear door. You can see that it had separated and it has a rip in the vinyl. I guess at this point you could peel off the vinyl and bring it to an upholstery shop and have them recover it. Then re-install it yourself, save a bit of money.https://volvoforums.com/forum/pictur...pictureid=3672

7. In order to peel off the vinyl, you'll have to remove the plactic trim piece that holds the power window switch. To do so you have to separate the black rectangle plastic piece, and the plastic tab below the door pull from the inner panel. The are glued in pretty good.

Do you use liquid nails on the door panel pieces? I replaced a speaker in drivers door yest and the panel came off in 2 pieces. I thought I would research what people use to put them back together. Seems like a good fix.

cdnbluez 08-15-2011 01:35 PM

I used a tube of constuction adhesive with a caulking gun

mowntnbkr 08-16-2011 07:39 PM

Cool, I used Liquid Nails and a few clamps and it worked great. After doing the speakers, I did a door lock actuator in a rear door and I had to reglue it too. I have only had my S70 for a couple weeks. Putting $$ into the mechanics first but I will do what you did eventually. Great job!
