service light comes on when i start the car

98 s70
service light is on when i start the car. turns off after a little while driving it. is this a reminder of some sort? how can i reset?

Yes, it is a Service Reminder. It comes on every so many miles. I can't remember what THE interval TECH told me but I wanna say every 5k? I think pre-97 850 vehicles, you can res-set the light manually. 97 850's and s70's and on you have to have a scanner do it. Mine came on and Tech took care of it for me as he has a scanner. You can go to a dealer and they should be able to reset it unless you can deal with the light. I couldn't, drove me nuts to look at it. I want to say IPD also sells a service light reset flasher, but its like $120.

You could try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 30 seconds. Be sure you have the radio code before you try it though or else your radio won't work.

this did not work for my '98, S70. How long do I need to hold reset button in before I turn the car on?

Johnny Mullet 05-09-2009 09:32 PM

Up to 12 seconds actually.

Service Light Will Not Reset on the '98's

Well, I could hold it for over a minute and it simply does not work. I also fired up my OBD-II scanner and it would not reset the light either. I read another post that stated that the trip reset does not work on the '98 models.

To reset the light on the '98 models you have to get the special tool or have a service tech do it. I guess it will stay on.

I have a 98 s70, and according to mitchell on demand you need a scanner(thank god I have one) the dash reset only works for 99 & up sorry

rspi 05-10-2009 03:01 PM

By scanner I guess you mean OBD-II code reader. If so, I'd like instructions on how to make it clear the Service Reminder light because I could not figure it out.

BlazeS70 05-10-2009 11:25 PM

I went to Precision to have a smoke test done and afterwards, the guy said he'd reset and clear the codes...but he couldn't turn the Service light off. You need to go to a Volvo dealership or someplace with a Volvo-specific tool to turn the Service light off.

The dash reset procedure only works if the light does not come on while the engine is running. The procedure is:

1. Press and hold Trip Odometer reset button
2. Turn ignition key to run position KPII(not the start position)
3. Wait 30 seconds or until service light begins blinking
4. Release Trip Odometer button
5. Turn ignition to off position

hehe

Mine comes on everytime but goes after about 5 mins.

Call me mad, but I quite like it. It acts as an indicator for me not to drive too hard,

Not sure how this applies these days but as a young man I was always told not to thrash a car from cold.

i.e. gives me five minutes to warm the engine up before I start releasing the 200bhp rollercoaster ride.
