Turbo question.

Hey all.
I have two 2001 Volvos - an S60 and a V70.
Both are T5's - 2.3 5 cylinder 247HP.
Both need their turbos rebuilt as they are getting oil into the air intake.
I have seen parts advertised, but I do not know how to identify which turbo my cars have.
Anyone point me in the right direction please.?

Do not wish to extract the turbos until I have the parts on hand if I can manage that.

Thanks.

start by finding the engine designation - should be on a plate on the firewall or on the timing belt cover. Should be something like "B5234T3". If you can't find that, look at the VIN's 6/7 digits - should be a number like "53". Once you know the engine identifier, you can google that and should see the turbo type ie the "TD04HL-16T" (or 18T) reference. Note the TD04HL refers to the family of compressors and the 16T or 18T refers to the volume capacity. The rebuild kits are generic to the family (ie a kit with new seals etc) would be the same for all Mitsubishi TD04HLs - ie the seals and clips for the 16T or 18T would be the same. You would also have the option to swap in bigger impeller/compressor wheels should you want to fix any damaged vanes and upgrade say from a 16T to an 18T. Check out the ardideas.com web site for rebuild kits and upgrades. They also have a good how to vid.

Thank you - good info and great help.

B5234T3 is the designation on both vehicles.

Shall pursue that line of inquiry.. :)

Cheers.

Ok.

Found a number of turbo kits that promised to suit my model.

Prices ranged quite considerably.

I have purchased one from eBay which originates in China.
I have made a number of purchases from China and so far - always received the item I was wanting.
This kit cost me a total of NZ$43.00 - about UKP26 - the contents of the kit are no different in appearance from kits which were priced at US$105.00
We shall see what turns up.
If it works I will immediately order a second one for the S60.

Cheers all,
Kilroy

Make sure the PCV system isn't clogged. That's a much more common cause of oil in the intake.

Thanks for that, but there is oil actually leaking from the underside of the turbo on the V70, and oil in the intake from there to the intercooler.
The S60 only has a small drip from under the turbo, but I can smell oil in the exhaust just after starting. Never see any smoke.
I figure the oil in the mix will be queering the mixture settings as the O2 sensors react, so I need to clean the act(s) up.. :)
