What do you think a 99 S70 w/ 180K miles is worth?

The friend who I am fixing the car for now wants to get rid of it. She would have traded up in the cash for clunkers program had it qualified.

It has been in 2 accidents where it was hit hard. The dealer repaired it both times but the dash makes a very annoying squeeking sound. All doors and lids close properly and line up well. The car tracks straight ahead and runs well.

The paint work is nice and glossy (silver) with a few dents and dings but nothing major.

They have a house in a McMansion development so it lived in the Texas sun its whole life. That is really the worse part; the interior. The front seats are not cracked or torn but have a lot of lines. The rear seat is an 8 of 10. The carpert is flat out nasty....coffee and dirt stains all over it. The leather on the doors is all bubbled from sun exposure.

The wheels are all have curb rash, clearcoat gone, and pretty ugly.

The ABS light is on which I have yet to disgnose why.

They are spending about $300 in parts with me for the A/C work.

I have no idea when the timing belt was done.

Pics will be posted in the next few days but what do you think something like this is worth.

As a trade in I doubt they will get more than 2 grand if that much.

I am considering buying it if they sell it for under 1 grand. Between 500-700 bucks and I would buy it today.

It is a nice commuter car and if I find a junked one with nice interior I will just swap everything out and have myself a sweet car but if that never occurs you can't beat a Volvo so cheap.

Okay...the dash squeaking probably has nothing to do with it having been in accidents, but rather, it has to do with it being a Volvo S70 :). Read the first "Sticky" in the forum for more on this issue. Same with the ABS light- it's probably a bad control module, which is an easy fix. (don't assume it's the module, scan it first, but by far, the module is the most common cause.) The leather on the doors problem... if it's the inserts around the pull handle/ window switches... has nothing to do with being from Texas... these cars all do that at some point- the panels on my '98, which as far as I can tell has spent its life in Massachusetts and Ohio, have come completely unglued. There's various ways to fix them, search the forum to find them.

As for the value... it's hard to say. KBB is a good resource, but even THAT isn't perfect. If it's a car with a clear title, a reasonably good body, and the interior can be cleaned, I don't see why that car wouldn't go for at least $2,500, selling it on the private market.

I wouldn't pay anymore that $1000 for it. You are looking at parts alone of $1500 min. Probably closer to $2000.

Timing belt, water pump, tensioners etc
ABS unit rebuild
PCV
plugs
suspension issues (guaranteed)
brakes (guaranteed)

In perfect condition it's worth $3500/4000

This car as described is in Poor condition with no service history, Run from it

I rebuilt my 98 and it's mechanically as perfect as I can get it with 166K now.
Interior a 9
Exterior a 8.5
mechanically 9.5

everything works, no CEL's, drives smooth at 80MPH. No oil leaks etc.

I am saying this because I couldn't get more that $3500/$4000 for it in that condition. And it's a T5. But I may sell it this fall and rebuild another one for kicks.

I need to clarify my earlier post... to get that 2,500 I mentioned, well, that includes cleaning the interior and fixing the ABS (probably needs a module, can be rebuilt pretty cheaply)
