1999 s80 t6 with only 82k starting to show wear
i purchased a 1999 s80 t6 for my daughter. has 82k miles. we really like the car. thought it was a good deal. starting to see issues....what can i really expect? front strut mounting plates shot, coolant level low warning message appears with full resevior and no temp issue, some sort of minor oil leak which no one can find...i can use some advice and help.

i purchased the car in brooklyn ny in july 2011. now has 89k on it. city people don't drive much. as you can see in 17 months we only put 7k on the car and that was with my using it for work to keep it running. kids in college don't drive it much either.

For a 13/14 year old car, an awry sensor, suspension work and a small oil leak? That's pretty darn good! Early P2 platform cars (S80 being the earliest) had their quirks. Suspension components wearing out frequently is one of them. If the car is a T6, transmission problems are quite common when you start getting north of 100k, so keep it serviced. Interior wear also starts to show when these cars get old. Overall, they DO NOT like to be neglected. Putting off any sort of preventative maintenance will only cost you more with these. Also, get your timing belt changed if you haven't already. You may only have 90k on the car, but it's still a 13 year old belt keeping your pistons from slamming into your valves.

Thank you for the heads up and advise....you are right,the inside is starting to break down including passenger window falling off track....guy at auto glass place told me to just not use it....cost too much to fix... ...do I make the investment getting the oil leak fixed?

You always get leaks fixed, they will only get worse. 6,000 Miles per year in the big city is far worse that 15,000 miles per year in an rural area or for a highway traveler.
Some oil leaks can be put off a little, like a slow cam cover leak. Some people put off leaks like rms but that's a big risk because the seal can pop out and you can loose a lot of oil in a very short amount of time. I'm not sure why people always focus on mileage anyway, age will cause many things in a car to fail. Rubber, plastic, rusty metals will cause just as much problems as high miles. When my 740 GLE had over 400,000 miles on it, it was in better shape than a most cars with less than 200,000 on them. |
