2000 S80 2.9L ASR--I'm New to Volvos!!

Hi all
I currently own a 1982 380SEL Mercedes. If anybody here knows the w126s they know that I bought the worst w126 engine possible, the 3.8L.

Anyways, I've been browsing for a new car for awhile now, and last night I came accross a 2000 S80 for $3,800. I have yet to see more than a picture of the car, but it has 83,000 miles and the seller claims that besides a few small nicks and dings it is in excellent running and cosmetic condition. Cold A/C, good engine, transmission, brakes, leather, tires etc. He says he maintained it regularly. He says the low price is to sell the car fast due to some personal problems.

First, what does the ASR stand for? Having never owned anything but an older Mercedes, I just want some of your opinions as to what to watch out for. I've read a few of the front page posts just to get an ideo of some issues. Timing belt at 105k is not big deal, especially at the price of $800 because my Benz is due for timing chain (+ a lot more) and I'm looking at $1.5k+. Are there any other big maintenance milestones for these cars? Any other typical issues such as leaks, noises, failing electronics etc? I've read several posters that have tried to shun people from buying an S80 and instead to buy an S60. What's the reason for that? Also, what kind of gas mileage should these cars get?

I appreciate any responses. Having a newer car will be very very different for me. I'm a DIYer as much as possible, but I know nothing about these newer electrical systems. But, for the next few years I need to get a car that I can drive for more than two weeks without it needing $500 for some old broken part.

Read my signature. Think of why you are getting a car 7 yrs oldfor that price. That price should be for a 2000 Geo, not a Volvo. Get my point?
