2000 s80 stutter/ rough idle

Hi everyone
Big fan and great appreciator of the forum. I have a 2000 s80 turbo that I love. Have had only minor problems for the two years i have had car. Took a short road trip a couple of weeks ago and on way home, car developed a chug at idle. When i got going, car seemed to run fine but seemed like it was on the way to stalling when stopped. haven't driven it much since. Problem remained constant. this weekend did a quick plugs, air filter, fuel filter job. also checked injectors and coils. I live in arizona so plastics and rubbers like to dry out. Wiring was stiff, but in decent shape and connections look clean. Drove to work tonight on new plugs, etc. and seemed perfect until car warmed up. Now chug is lessened. More like stutter, but is always there. sometimes affects acceleration sometimes accelerates normally. I still keep thinking fuel. but I am just a novice mechanic. Miss my Maxima. easy to work on. Anyway, please help.
Thanks ahead of time
Bill

Additionally, the check engine light that has been on, flashes. I read on another thread that this is misfiring that relates to plugs and coils. Since the plugs are new, could I then speculate that I have a coil issue?

The only way to know for sure (without using the process of elimination and replacing half the electrical components until you get lucky anyways) is to have the trouble codes read. The computer knows why the light is flashing. If it says #3 is misfiring then you only need to replace #3 coil.

I forget which, but either eeuroparts or myswedishparts (dot com) sell the generic Bosch branded coils at a discount. They are OEM, only the logo (and price) differs.

This just happened to me, same exact problem. is your idle surging? and is your check engine light flashing occasionally? When this happened i changed my plugs, and arced all my coils to the frame to see if they were sparking. then the car ran good for a day or 2. then the 3rd day it ran fine until it warmed up, then i am having the same problem you describe. what my problem was is that i needed 2 new oxygen sensors on bank 1, which was causing my engine to in turn misfire and run really rich. I also needed a new DCI coil, not sure what that is but my mechanic said i needed it. since i had no clue what a DCI coil was, i had my mechanic install the part and the oxygen sensors, it ended up being cheaper that way since i only paid 50 bucks for labor. but if i were you i would have your oxygen sensors checked, as well as your DCI coil.

hope that helps you out

Thanks for the input so far. Crito, do you know of an inexpensive reader that I could get a hold of?

abflip567 03-02-2009 11:32 AM

you can go to advanced auto parts, or autozone and they will do one for free. They are not volvo diagnostic codes, but they will be pretty much the same as a volvo diagnostic code. that is how i found out i needed 2 oxygen sensors.

BSR makes one you can buy on eBay for around US$200. The manual has a complete list of all Volvo control modules and the trouble codes they generate.

There's also a cross reference table in Vadis for generic OBD2 codes. But the generic code readers the auto parts stores have won't be able to clear codes, which is handy for those pesky intermittent errors -- if code doesn't recur immediately it's probably a fluke and rebooting the network (by pulling negative from battery) will likely resolve the issue.

Well I went and bought a reader at Checker. It is an Innova 3100. Seems to do a good job. Clears codes and all that. Code was for a cylinder 2 misfire. Can you guide me as to which one is cylinder 2?

Faciin engine standing at front, how do they number?

Thanks again for all the help.

Crito 03-02-2009 03:09 PM

It'll clear the check engine light and service reminder and that's about it. Won't clear squat from the other 10 modules. But anyways... have no idea which is #2. Maybe someone else can help you.

starting from passengers side the cylinders go 123456, you will see what im talking about when you pull off the spark plug cover.

hope that helps
