2000 Volvo S80 2.9 Cam Out of Place
 

2000 Volvo S80 2.9 6Cyl

Hi, I own a mechanic shop and one of my techs forgot to place mark on the camshaft before separating it from the gear. The Rear camshaft and gear is in its correct place but the front one is out. We don't know what the correct position for the front cam at all. Does anyone have any instructions or pictures of what the front cam looks like in the correct position without the gear on it. If pictures are available, it would be great if the a picture from the top and both sides was available. Thank you.

Basically, the gears were removed without locking the cams. Now we're stuck.

You'll have to pull the cover from off the back of the cam and make sure it is aligned. The cams have off-set slots in them. When aligned, the intake cam is slotted on the high side of the cam cover seam and the exhaust cam is off-set to the lower side of the seam.

When you are looking at the back of the cams, they have part numbers on them. The intake cam has an "I" in the part number and the exhaust cam has an "E" in the part number.

After everything is back together, you roll the motor over by hand a few times to make sure there is no interference of course.

Strangely, the cams in the pictures don't match the one on the car I have. I have an extra groove in the intake cam which I believe it to be for the distributor.

Is the slot on the back cam at 5 o'clock? Where is the extra slot in the intake cam in relation to the slots in the pictures? I think its for the cam position sensor. Which cam has the Variable valve timing pulley?

I really don't see any difference other than the notch. Turn it like this:

Then put the cam gear back on the front of it. If the other one has the gear on it and it is aligned with the mark, I would check the back of it to make sure it is aligned with the seam as well. The cut should be below the seam.

The cut should be at approx. the 5 0'clock position

Mark on the cam sprocket or back of the cam that we have been focusing on?

Once the rear of the cams are aligned, the front sprockets really don't matter. The reason they put marks on the cam sprockets is to let you know the cams are aligned to the proper location. Once the actual cams are aligned you can put the cam sprockets on and make your own new marks.

When you get a new cam sprocket, it has no marks on it. You should make sure the cams are aligned and locked (so it doesn't move), then bolt the sprocket on and file a mark on it to match the cover mark. From then on, the cam is aligned when the sprocket mark is aligned with the cover.

I posted a picture, why can't you use it? Align yours like the picture, install your belt, turn it over by hand a few times, and move on.

You know, there really is no reason to be rude. I'm just kindly asking for confirmation because if we mess up, it means new head and forever gone customer. I appreciate your help, I really do but I'm just hesitant. I apologize if I'm being rude.

Unless the car has CVVT...

The notch is for the reluctor for the cam position sensor. Its so it cannot be installed incorrectly. It is not for timing.
