2001 S80 Timing Belt replacement DIY?

My school teacher daughter has this car and ask me to replace the timing belt. Like dads everywhere I said sure order the parts and a book. Wellshe has the parts but the book (DVD) she ordered is junk. We can't find a book for this year. Is it available at a dealer. Is this job possible for a DIY job. I've done several Toyotas in the past. She does not have the 800 the dealer wants to do this work. We have belt, water pump and tensioner do we need an idler also.
Thanks
Sherm

Yes do the idler as well.

It is pretty straight foward.
Before removing the belt make a mark from the pully to the cam cover. Sometimes the VVT pulley will move some. Then when installing the new belt make sure the marks are lined up and you will be fine.
The crank mark is hard to see unless you remove the lower crank pulley. There is an outer pulley that holds the serp. belt in remove than then the crank pulley and you should see it pretty good.

Also there is 2 types of marks on them. 1. There is a slot cut into the 2 teeth and you would line up the mark on the engine beteen the 2 marks. 2.One line is cut at the bottom of the groove for the tooth and you line that up.

get the car in a well lighted warm place, also pull the pass side tire , take your time, take your time, check and double check, take your time, a good helper is a must also, this job can be done by a D.I.Y but just remember, take your time. good luck to you.

I am also going to be diving head first into this job in two weeks. My '99 I bought used and has pretty high miles so I figure "better safe than sorry". Ah, a heated garage, a couple friends, some beer and bloody knuckles...outta be fun;) I am going to buy the kit which includes: timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and timing belt idler. What else will I need? Gaskets, loctite, 1 less beer...lol.. I haven't looked to see what all I will be needing to take off of the car yet to get to the timing belt. Water pump, etc.

Here is the kit I was looking at:

It looks like a good kit, but from what im seeing it would be cheaper to rder the actual individual parts from http://www.eeuroparts.com/searchresu...3&cat=1014

Its also a good site so its no problems regarding trust.. You also get free shipping here. The link I sent you is also for a continental belt, so save some money and leave ebay out of it this time

Thanks for the replies. I have one very important question. That is, what does the timing mark look like on the crank seal carrier plate. Is it the cast in flange with the little dot on the end or what. I am about ready to pull all the pullies off the crank to make sure I am doing this right. My son in law wanted to help so he just pried the belt off without asking so I have to start from scratch. I found the little notched mark on one crank pully tooth so I think I'll be ok on that side of the set. I'm ok on the cams I have found marks on both sprockets and have aligned them with the notches in the top cover. I sure would like to see a picture of the marks for the crankshaft. Today I am working in the driveway in the rain. I didn't want to get my boat wet by putting it outside.

Thanks
Sherm

That mark looks like it is a long way from the surface of the sprocket. Maybe I was looking to close. I have it all installed now I will take it apart tomarrowif I can't find a mark that looks like this. Is the spline on the crank have one blind so the thing can only be assembled one way or do I create another problem if I pull the sprocket all the way off.
Thanks

Look closely from the top.
The S80 really doesn't have the same veiw form the side. The motor is up in more.

If you look closely you will have to look from an angle it is hard but look closely and you will see the mark on the motor.

The Tensioner gets in the way. If it would make you feel better remove the belt again and find the mark and maybe even paint it to make it easier to see.
Then reinstall everything and try again.

Also make sure you crank the engine over twice by hand to make sure all is lined up.

Hey tech it runs great. Went out this morning to take a look at timing mark and it was right on.
I found a sketch on another site that showed the little flange as being the mark for the S80. It is cast into the seal carrier and is just where you said it would be. If anyone ever does this in the driveway they are crazy. I spent 30 min. just trying to get thethiming beltcover back in place. The notches in the gear are very small one on each of two teeth. The flange lines up to the center space between the two teeth. I had to ajust the tensioner three times I hope it is ok now. I did replace the water pump, idler and tensioner so I hope I won't be doing this job again soon. Thanks so very much for the help!
