2003 S80 is this a good deal?
 

Hi ok so my inlaws have a 2003 S80, it must have had a leak or something but the engine is dead. they dont want to mess with it so they offered to give it to me, the mechanic that has it now says he can install a used engine for $3800 out the door, does that seem right? could i do it cheaper myself? is there anything else i should do at the same time? i have never owned a Volvo before so any advice would be appreciated. do these used engines last long?

if it's a used engine, 3,800 seems like a little too much. What's the mileage on the new block??

You can get a new engine for a little under that if my memory serves me correctly. 2.9 or twin turbo??????

my memory is failing me on where to find a new engine online. $3,800 seems a little proud, as they should be charging you about 1k for installation and 2,800 for a used engine seems a little high, but if you're confident the engine you're receiving is of quality, then go for it. I paid a little more for the full vehicle, and now I'm regretting the costs of not having a solid car. An S80 with a sound engine is a beautiful thing.

If the replacement engine is known to be good, its a very nice car for $3800. Assuming, also, everything else on the car is up to snuff. You know, electronics, brakes, suspension and especially the none-too-cheap transmission. Finding an 03 for less than $4K is a pretty good deal. My only question is what happened to engine #1 under the care of the mechanic who wants to install engine #2? I'd listen very carefully to his explanation; and he should know something about engine #2. I could find a long block somewhere, but I wouldn't trust my judgment on it, or my installation and wiring skills.

I'll take "NO" for $500! For $3,800 you can buy your self a running S80! That's extremely steep for a 2nd hand motor, unless it's a COMPLETE rebuild. Do you know where the motor is coming from?
