2004 S80 foglight installation
Ok, I'm helping my brother out here:
Has an S80 with no factory foglights--car is set up for them, wiring, switch inside, etc., just not installed. Bought the foglights. Volvo gave hardware as torx-head sheet-metal screws. Diagrams show same. Problem: There are no anchors--the hole in the bracket for the foglight is the same as the (empty) one for the mount. It looks like it should have a clip-nut (slide-on) or similar fastener. Volvo swears there is no other fastener, but you cannot install screws w/o something to screw into. Anyone put these in before? How's it done? Thanks, DKaz |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Yes there should be a slide nut in the bumper for the screws to go into.

RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Thanks, I think so too. Any idea where to come up w/ such things? (other than the not-so-helpful volvo dealer)
|
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Radio shack or an auto parts store.
Some call them nutplates. |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Nut Plates! I'm not going near that one with a 10 foot pole:D!

RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Im actually planning to add fog lamps next week and seeing as I have to pay the dealer for the software update to make them work, im considering letting them install it.. How much should this cost me to have them install it.. (software update is 44 dollars)
|
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Should be about 1 hour labor.
|
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
I'm not from the US, im actually from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean... I'm just here for University (University of South Florida).. so I have no clue what an hours labour should cost me..
Any clues? Thanks |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Also, I dont have the switch for it and I assume I dont have the relay either... I saw the relay selling online here http://www.swedishpartswholesale.com...&Ntt=Relay at a fairly reasonable price but where can I find the switch? Should I just let the dealer handle that when i carry it in for the software upgrade?
Thanks |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
I would let the Dealer install what is needed to get it going. The switch should be part of the headlight switch already. They just pull the block plate off and install a cover.
Im not exactly sure what the dealers labor rates are I believe most are like $100.00 or so. The indy shop I am at is only like $80.00. |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Im glad to say I just got a pair of genuine volvo OEM foglights used on ebay for 52.50, they look in great condition and im AMAZED that I got such a great deal. Normally the aftermarket ones sell for about 45-50 each... This is one less part to deal with, so im just waiting to head down to the dealer to have them update the software and put in the switch... il try to do the install of the actual lights myself.
How complicated is the procedure for this? How do I remove the plastic space savers in the front bumper before installing the fog lamps? Also, are there any special screws I should use for this job? Thanks |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Did they give you the hardware?
There is the slide nuts that slide onto the bumper then the screws go through the foglight into the bumper. To get that cover out look in the center there should be a flap that is locked holding the cover open and tight in the hole. Pull the tab and it will close some and should fall out. |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Il, give this a try but im wondering if to just let someone pro do it, considering that I have to change my headlight lens also. No sense halfassing it when I already have to pay labour charges I figure.
The fog lamps and the centre armrest are the only 2 things i really wanted to add/replace on the car, so once im done with these I can say job complete... now just to keep it running in top form. |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Why do you have to change the lens did it crack?
|
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Yes tech, soem fool at my apartment complex backed into the front of it, not hard to gifure out who it is though because they managed only to hit the light and not the bumper... I have a prime suspect and to make it more suspicious, they always used to park near me, and now park on the opposite side of the lot... I can get a good condition OEM one on ebay for about 90 plus shipping.. Brand new from rockauto is about 130 or so... The aftermarket one is about 70 or 80 but I prefer having the volvo valeo logo and so on
|
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Actually im calculating it here, with shipping from ebay the USED lens will be 110 exact
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ksid=p3907.m32 Now, from rockauto including shipping, the nordic lens NEW would be about $120 and the genuine Volvo lens new will be about $133 What would be your call in my situation? Some people are telling me just leave it cracked as I already sealed it... but thats the wrong philosophy I think.. my father actually went as far as to tell me its cracked, why fix it because someone will just hit it again... But if the car appears in mint condition, why should I leave this blemish on it. And advice would be apreciated Thanks |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
I would just spend the couple of extra dollars and get the new one.(Volvo)
|
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
Im thinking if to do so, its pricey for a lens but I HOPE to never have to change it again..
Also, Im thinking to let the dealer do that because I want to make sure I dont get any condensation issues with it. Im hoping they dont rape me with charges and prices as they tend to do.. I also plan to hassle them about the free ETM software upgrade while they are doing the install for the foglights... |
RE: 2004 S80 foglight installation
For them to install teh glass they will pretty much have to remove the front bumper.
