2014 Trans Oil - Drain & Fill or Not
 

2014 3.2L non-turbo, 6 speed Transmission, 60,000 miles
What is your opinion on draining and filling (not power flushing) the transmission. I know this car has no drain plug or even a dip stick to check the level of fluid. I understand Volvo says to leave it alone, but in the past I have drained and refilled (using the IPD system) at about 60k intervals on my previous 2004 s80. I know the trans in the 04 is a GM and considered a weak point of that car - how does the 2014 rate?
Does this trans have an internal filter that should be changed if I were to opt for this service?
My mechanic has a method of setting the proper fluid level and said he has drained and refilled for other customers.

Your 2014 6 speed Aisin transmission doesn't have anything in common with a 2004 GM transmission so no point in comparing.

A few points - yes the transmission is serviceable - there should be a torx bolt on the bottom and a fill bolt on the top under the air intake. The key about doing the proper service is that the fluid level needs to be set while monitoring the transmission's temperature. Normally this means the shop uses VIDA DICE to get the fluid to the correct temp to set the level. Final point is that new cars are using synthetic fluids and with a sealed transmission, the fluids can last 200K+ miles. Volvo doesn't require servicing for "normal" usage so unless you are frequently towing, driving in mountains, or towing while driving up to Lake Tahoe :-) this is not going to provide any value at 60K miles. I'd probably ask a bit more about his methods and then check in with a dealer to see what they do.

Sounds like this is something I don't really need to do (we have a truck for towing) and do a little mountain driving but more just cross-country trips.
I suspect my mechanic doesn't have the equipment to maintain the proper fluid temperature while checking the level, but will verify that if I decide to do it.
