20's on a S80? Why not?
 

As 20's are considered fine on a BMW 5 series, Mercedes CLS or other sedans, Audi A6, etc, I have no clue why I was so warned not to try it. Conservative Volvo owners consider 20's blasphemy for some odd reason. Here are one of the first sets of 20's I have ever seen on my S80 for you guys to evaluate.

I'm kind of 50/50 on it. Those are nice looking wheels but it seems like it would ride awfully rough.

Im coming from a 3 series BMW and find the S80 suspension very sloppy, so much so that I was contemplating Bilsteins all around.

I like a firm ride.

It's not as bad as I thought it would be, but then again, personally, it seems crazy to me to spend that kind of 50% of the cars worth on rims and new tires.

The car doesn't sit right...looks like it's too high of the ground or something...maybe it needs to be lowered

ya those 20" look good but the wheel design doesnt suit the car..try to go with more spokes..or get brembo drilled rotors and painted calipers..

I'm not on this forum much, so I just saw this. Not disrespecting your taste at all, just not my thing. I think the wheel well isn't big enough for the 20's to sit right. It looks ok, but I think 18's are about as big as I would go. I have 17's that I am pretty happy with. I do agree with you though, the suspension could definitely be firmer.

People never seem to understand that the "stance" and "wheel well" and "height" never have to change when increasing wheel size. Would seem like a forum member, and their love of cars, would know this basic fact by now but here it is again...

FOR EACH AND EVERY INCH THE WHEEL GOES UP IN SIZE THAT EXACT AMOUNT OF TIRE SIDEWALL HEIGHT IS REDUCED. The overall diameter of the wheel/tire combination retains the same diameter. Don't believe me? Look here...Tire size calculator. Plug in my tire size of 225 35 20 then plug in your factory size.

My car is no taller than yours. My car is no higher than yours. My cars wheel well space is the same as yours. My cars stance is the same as yours. Yes, my car does have wider wheels than yours, more rubber on the road. Yes my car has a lot less lateral sway when turning due to tire flex. Yes, my rims are more susceptible to pot hole damage due to less tire cushion. Yes my wheels could be heavier due to more metal/rubber-air ratio depending on wheel design.

I guess the emotion is an American-socio thing, like rap music on loud stereos...conjuring up discomfort. In Europe, Volvos are modded all the time. That donk look, like 24's on a Lexus is a look their after. Those suspensions are raised.

Again to all that don't know yet....when you go plus three in rim size, the shorter tire keeps the overall diameter consistent. Were talking about nothing but less sidewall and a bit more tire width providing better handling and a firmer ride. No scraping, no rubbing, better handling, and no speedometer error. Please KNOW the facts when making comments like "ride is too high"...um, no it's not. It's the exact same.

Refrain from making a prejudicial comment based on an optical illusion. Base them on fact.

I'm going with 18s just because I like a little more rubber and for cost reasons but I think those wheels look fine I don't know why everyone thinks Volvo's gotta look like grocery getters there's a smaller model Lincoln that lots of people put 20s on and that car is very similar to the s80. I can't figure out the logic except that Volvo is predominantly driven by middle aged white guys. As long as u like it that's all that matters. I got a question for u tho. My car has a peg on the rotor that the factory wheels have a hole it goes thru. Did u just grind that little peg off or did u find wheels that had the hole?
