so I have 25% brake life left with pads and rotors all around needing replacement, the mechanic told me that I need to bring it back soon(1-2weeks) for replacement.

My question is I feel I have longer time with that but I dont know. What would you guys say mileage wise that I have left?

Im probably gonna attempt this job for the first time ever as its 1000$+ for brakes and rotors all around.

I also notice that the rotors come in 300, 305 and 315 mm in size? Also I saw some were Zinc plated? From a forum search I see a lot of people are happy with FCP groton?

RE: 25%

Unless you drive real hard, you should have well over 2 weeks left. I would guess about 7000 miles, but that's just a SWAG.

Here is how to do it yourself:

Rear: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...11&t=17390

RE: 25%

Can you give an idea on MM's left on the pads?

Because the fronts should be replaced at 3MM and the rears at 2MM. If it has more than that you should have about 5k more miles on those pads unless you are really hard on brakes.

RE: 25%

He didnt say the mm left on them, he had it up on the lift and checked it that way.

that write up is really great, i feel somewhat confident now lol. I just need to buy my parts ~

Am I looking at 4-5 hrs of work ?

RE: 25%

All depends on how slow you work.

If you have a floor jack and an air gun 1 hour should do it. But if crappy jack and all hand tools 2 to 3 hours.

I'd relish that job with some beers... get parts from FCP... the ceramics and brembos work great on the s80.

If you were in Tampa I'd help you knock that one out fast...

im just looking for a uber warm day to do it on ............... FREEEEEEEEEZZZZZZING...

I have a garage (still cold)but the s80 is big, so I have to drive it to one side, so i have room on the other side lol..

RE: 25%

Best of luck with that, I'm so accustomed to my accord eating through pads but the s80 just seem to last for me.. The pads have been on the car for 2 yrs now and still look over 50% and I am fairly punishing on the brakes...

to 75ohm, never realised there was someone else in Tampa on the forum...

RE: 25%

Whats the average on the Brake pads? I managed to get 25k, so I must be hard on them lol I'm guessing..

tech 12-08-2008 08:56 AM

RE: 25%

Usually between 20k and 40K depending on driving styles.

BILL_MCCASSEY 12-08-2008 09:15 AM

RE: 25%

If you do have 25% left and are at 25k miles on the pads, you should get between5 to 8k before grindig. If it were me, and I didn't have a shop to use, I would wait till it gets a bit warmer and do it myself.

Good luck
Bill

RE: 25%

thanks, Im considering to bringin it to Volvo(to get a second opinion), the lady told me that from what she finds from my service record and sincethe rotors arenot vibrating then they should be okay.. We'll see lol

RE: 25%

hahaha poor me..... I have metal to metal contact on the rear's, and the fronts I have about 2 mm left lol....... has anyone seen any more worse state then this lol?

tech 12-12-2008 11:19 AM

RE: 25%

Yes but thats another story.

I will just way this it was so bad the rotor had cut through and only the center part was moving when the car was. The flat rotor part was staying still in the caliper.

gordon368 12-13-2008 06:17 PM

RE: 25%

well my stubborn dad wouldnt listen to me lol we ended up getting Semi metallic brake pads made by Duralast Ultra, Rotors also by Duralast ultra .... I have a feeling they are gonna squeal and a "told ya so" will be in order.. Is it true if I dont change my rotors, that they will just wear faster?

Also my E-brake pads are worn, So I need to change those to, Where are they located and are they easy to change?

gordon368 12-14-2008 12:09 PM

RE: 25%

so i was gonna change the front pads and rotors today and ran into a problem. The lug nuts were on so tight, I couldnt get them undone, spent a good 20 minutes for both fronts and thet wouldnt loosen, I believe the socket that is in the spare is worn out. Luckily the forester has the same size lug nuts so I tried that fresh one and it still didnt budge.

is there a trick that I am missing? or did the Volvo Technician at the delearship over tighten them to the point I cant get them undone?

tech 12-14-2008 07:57 PM

RE: 25%

They overtightened them. Try to get them to redo them.

gordon368 12-25-2008 03:31 PM

RE: 25%

So thanks to you all, I got the front driver side rotor and brakes done, went smoothly. Problem is I got to the other side and there was one lug nut that was just to dang hard to get off, and had to stop.

do you guys just use bricks to stop the car rolling forward. I was scared the jack would fall down, with the force I had to use to get the bolts off the caliper and mounting bolt?

75ohm 12-25-2008 03:58 PM

RE: 25%

Put the other bolts back on, lower the car and put the e-brake on, break the stuck lug with the car on the ground and then go for it!
