99 S80 check engine light / rattling noise

Hi everyone,

New to the forums. I own a 99 S80 and just crossed the 150,000 mile mark yesterday. I have owned it since 2003 when I bought it with 25,000 miles on it.

Despite the problems with this year / model, my car has been amazing (knock on wood).

Yesterday I cleaned my car. I went to turn it on after and it started kind of funny....kind of hesitated and stuttered as if it wasnt going to turn on.

After driving home from the gas station my check engine turned on and when I opened my door (with the car still running) I noticed a rattling sound. Later last night the check engine light and rattling sound went away.

Today the check engine light and rattling sound is back. I'm going to take it to my mechanic this week, but I've kind of baffled by what would cause the rattling sound to start, then go away and then come back and it is conjunction with the check engine light. Any thoughts???

Where is the rattle? Under the car or from the engine bay?

The rattle is coming from under the car.....

Sounds like an exhaust bracket might be broke. An easy fix with a replacement bracket that's available. Or it could be a heat shield that fell onto the exhaust pipe.

Thanks for the insight. I replaced an exhaust bracket in 2009. Would an exhaust bracket or fallen heat shield cause the check engine light to come on??

Your CEL light has nothing to do with your exhaust rattle. You mentioned that the light came on after you washed the car. Maybe some water fell onto your ignition wires?
