AC blower runs without key

2000 S80 - My wife said she noticed the ac blower motor running a couple times after she turned off the car and removed the key. Then yesterday, I was jacking up thecar to put it on jack stands and the ac blower started running (no key in ignition switch). I had to insert the key and cycle on/off to stop the motor.

Any ideas what is causing the ac blower to run when the key is out?

RE: AC blower runs without key

That is a normal function it is called an afterblow function.
It comes on to dry the evaperator after the A/C was used.

This stops mold from growing on the evaperator.

RE: AC blower runs without key

Yeah - I have a S80T '01 - and this freaked me out as well, when it first happened. It does cover this in the owner's manual - which I have read from front to back. I was also freaking out about the fuel tank door not closing and just kinda flapping in the breeze. Well come to find out, when you lock the car (either with the remote or from the driver's side door) there is a delay of 10 minutes, then the door automatically locks. Geezzzz. Smarty pants Sweedish engineers...

I have this same thing happening, the car has been sitting for about a year, all of a sudden today every 15 to 20 min the blower motor kicks on then off, then on for like 4 hours, cat hasn't been started in over a month. Any idea what this is?

"Afterblow" is where after the car is turned off and parked for ~50 minutes, the heater fan will run for ~7 minutes to dry the evaporator to hopefully prevent the stinky sock smell in the ac unit.

If your blower motor is doing something different - you may have a bad blower motor resister.

Need help

I have the same problem and it killed my battery and I wanna know some options on what it is (yes I have read every comment) just wondering if there’s more than one thing that could be wrong and if so what’s the price range on getting that fixed?

The first time this happened to me (nearly 4 years ago) I was pretty confused about this. However, I've found that if I turn the fan knob all the way to the red light, at least 30 seconds before turning the car off, this function won't happen.

If it does happen, you can turn your key to the first position, turn the knob all the way on then off again quickly, and it will stop this from happening again until the car is driven.
