Battery Drain
 

I'm having an issue where my battery will drain pretty quickly. I hooked up an amp meter to the negative battery cable and determined that fuse 32 is my issue. It controls the Central Electronic Module. It's pulling 2.8 amps on its own. My interior lights pull another 2 amps, but I can isolate those by closing the doors, trunk, and hood. Anyone have any suggestions? It doesn't do it all the time, only periodically. It'll go a couple days like normal and then it'll be like, "Surprise, I've drained the battery!"

Any help is appreciated.

New to the forum so I cannot give you a Volvo specific response, merely one from another vehicle with a similar condition:

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. Battery drained constantly, replaced it with two new batteries with 850 cold cranking amps each. Both also drained overnight. The issue turned out to be the wiring bundle in the drivers side near the mirror. The mirror had an auto-dim feature as well as being heated. I noticed the mirror tint was becoming distorted. I ended up redoing the wiring bundle because the wires melted together and shorted.

My suggestion, and the reason for the story is, look for what may appear to be a disconnected symptom because it sounds as if you have a short in your system.

The CEM is the brain of the interior. There is a lot of relays and circuits attached to it. I would start pulling relays one by one in the CEM and see if the voltage drain changes.

The one thing you have to remember about Volvo's is that they may have a lot of equipment running after you turn the key off so you should wait a few minutes after you turn the key off or connect the battery before checking for a battery draw.

My 2001 runs the A/C blower after the car is shut off to reduce mildew on the evaporator, that could certainly draw a decent amount. It shuts off about 4 minutes after the key has been turned off.

do search of the web-site....there are several very long threads discussing numerous causes.

I have a 2010 X90 that the battery is draining. I have replaced the battery, I make sure everything is shut off and the car is locked up each time.

What could this be it is very frustrating.

A common culprit is the glovebox illuminating bulb staying on when the glovebox is closed due to a problem with the contact on the cutout switch.

No the common cause of the battery drain on the new cars are the satellite radios after the subscription expires

No mention made of the OP's year and model of Volvo but older Volvo posts often relate battery draining to the glovebox light.
Very interesting that the satellite radios cause draining on the newish models.

The problem ended up being a bad cell in the battery.

Wondered about that possibility.
My wifes Daihatsu Sirion had exactly that problem just recently.
Intermittent internal short on one cell only.
Originally tested as OK and no alternator problems or loose wiring.
