Default To buy or not to buy, that is the question

Hello folks!

I've fallen in Love with a 1998 S80 T6 and I'd like to buy it but (there's always a but) there are a few things I'd like to ask of the experts, and you're the experts.

The catalytic converter warning light comes on and stays one. The current owner says it always does that because he doesn't drive it very often. He says it clears are a few minutes driving. Is that likely to be true, as I don't want to pay for a new cat and/or sensors, they're expensive!

I've heard of problems with the ECM (I think that's what it's called) shorting out. What's the story with this, as it sounds expensive too!

If driven within the speed limits and without using the awesome acceleration, what sort of petrol usage can I realistically expect?

Are there any specific points I should check carefully before buying it?

I might add the price seems right, NZ$5,000 (US$4,000) and it's done 185,000kms (115,000 miles) and has a full, main agent, service history.

Thanks for your help.

Mileage should be around 20 miles per gallon.
Not sure about catalytic converter warning lamp or ECM.

Check transmision. Accellerate hard and make sure it does not slip changing gears. A well known problem which costs close to $3500 USD to fix.
Check inner and outer tie rod ends.

Timng belt should have been changed at 105,000 miles

Car is trouble prone. If you like fixing your own vehicle, then would be a decent car for the right price. Not sure what the going price is for these cars in NZ.
If you do not fix your own vehicles, will be expensive to own.
