Default Well. This just sucks!!!!

Took my 02 S80 T6 in for a small oil leak and an occasional thunk when turning left. Dealer says:
Parts and install:

New front pads and rotors $678.79
Engine oil trap and all the bazillion parts to go with that $870.68
Inner Tie rod ends $1,239.81


That's, what?? A couple of trillion dollars?

Yeah, service on these things is very expensive. You can use a cleaner on the engine to see if it will clean up the oil trap. Seafoam and Auto-Rx are two. http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUp.htm http://www.auto-rx.com/Might take a while to stop the leak, if they ever work at all.

that is horrible. volvo always stiffs me on repair of my s80. i do the brakes myself, probably takes 2 hours to do. I also just did an inner tie rod end on my drivers side. those are not very hard either you just need a tie rod tool to take it off. i believe the size for it is a 9/16ths i could be wrong though. as for the oil trap i have no clue, sorry. hope i was of some help.

The vent box on the S80 T-6 is a little hard because of all the turbo piping but the intake manifold needs to come off to replace it.

Im not sure what they are thinking $1300.00 for inner tie rods?
They smoking crack?

an inner tie rod end will probly run you about 20 dollars at your local auto repair store. if you plan on doing it yourself

Not 100% sure but that might even be OEM. You would have to check with them to find out if it is an OEM part.

They are pretty easy to install to if you are pretty handy. But remember you will need an alignment right away.

I am sort of handy enough to tackle the brakes (I've rebuilt the brakes, front and rear ends of my 73 MG). About half of the above costs are labor. The problem is that right now it is -14 degrees Celcius, going down to -21 Celcius on the weekend and my garage isn't heated. I've got all the tools (probably) to do this.

Dealer labour rates are $110 per hour. They are only quoting 2 hours labor for the brake job. Out of $2,600, what's $220????

I checked the above link for doing the brakes. Doesn't look too hard, just too cold!!!!

Parts for the brakes (pads and rotors, OEM)are $375. Sound too much?

I just checked on FCP groton and it looks like they will cost less there the OEM pads are about $72.00 for the set and OEM Brembo rotors are about $53.00 each.

Tech. Thanx for the link. I just figured out what it would cost to purchase two rotors and the brake pad set. With currency exchange and shipping, (not including customs fees if any), it works out to $325Cdn. Unfortunately, not much difference really.

It is like a really really long socket that slides over the inner tie rod then grabs the part by the rack and you use a ratchet to loose it. That is one style there is many different styles. Me I have always used a pipe wrench to remove and install them. The key is to turn the wheel all the way so you can get the pipe wrench on it.
