Concern about my 99 S80 2.9 Purchase
 

Hello,

I bought a 99 S80 2.9 non turbo from my brothere in law about 5 mouths ago with 80K miles on it for $8600. So when he had it for 80K miles he had no problem with it at all and I thought I was buying a great car. Just a week after I bought the car the it would not start and I had to get it towed to the dealer and they said that I ETM throttle body needed to be replaced, so that cost me about $900. About just Two thousand miles after that I was driving on a busy road at a speed of about 40 miles and all of the sudden the speed just droped to 20mph and the steering weel got hard to turn, so I pulled on a shoping plaza and the car just stop and turned off by it self and it would not start. So I had to again get it towed to the dealer and they said something called the ECM needed to be replaced and that cost me $700. As of now it has 87K miles seems to be running just fine. I went on two long distance trips about 400 miles and it ran fine.

But my concern is that I did some research on the internet on the S80 it I learned that the 99-01 S80's have problems and defects. I heard that many people had transmission and eletrical problems and engine problems with these cars. I think that Im concern with is weather I may face othere majar problems down the road with this car like after 100K miles. The thing that I have really worried about is the possibility of the transmission failing. Just the thought of that scares me. I have an 96 850 and it has 203K miles on it and it had no problems at all since I had it and still runs great. So if I think that this car would cause me problems down the line then wont I be better off just selling it and buying a nice S70 or an S40.

Volvo will reimburse you for the ETM as of the first of the year. Return to the dealer and present a claim. Volvo has extended the warranty to 200,000 miles or 10 years.

Volvo had the warranty on WHAT extended to 200k/10 years? I have a 99 S80 2.9 and have had many things replaced at a low mileage (around 45k). Is there something I should know?

And the Electronic Module is different from the Throttle body, correct? Because I had the throttle body cleaned and noe I'm having some response problems...it is delaying.

No, it's the same thing............Electronic Throttle Module. Unfortunately Volvo had an Italian company (Marrelli) make it rather than Bosch. They fail quickly. I had the dealer clean mine in an effort to forstall the eventuall failure. That was prior to Volvo's acknowlegement that they had installed 'crappy' parts. Now Volvo has extended the warranty on the ETM to 200,000 miles or ten years.

So should I not have been charged for the cleaning on such low miles? Or is it strictly for a full failure of the part?


And in the 99, is the tranny GM? Or is it still an original Volvo part?

Re: the transmission. TECH will have to comment. Re: the ETM. Volvo has JUST acknowleged the faulty part. If you go back to your dealer he should reimburse you. Supposedly there will be a letter addressed to you in March of this year from Volvo informing you of your 'rights'.

Does it matter how long ago it was fixed? This must have been back in October '05. Another thing is I didn't have it replaced...It just cost me about 350 to have it cleaned out.

You should be OK on the late 05 repair. I have had mine cleaned by the dealer and will attempt to recoup the cost. Volvo has said that the cleaning will be reimbursed. I would imagine that this will only be reimbursed if the job was performed by a Volvo dealer.

From what I understand (Which I might be wrong) You pay for the throttle cleaning if it is dirty. When it goes bad they will replace it for FREE.

The S80 Transmissions are the GM transmissions. The S70 are Volvo/AW transmissions.

so, i have a 2001 s80 t6, lets say i neglect cleaning the throttle body, volvo will replace it for free?

No they will charge you to clean it first then when it acts up again they will replace it.
