D5 just stopped on Fast lane!

OK so yesterday I drove to Manchester, stayed the night this morning had my meeting, dropped my collegue off in Pontefract and headed down the A1, eventually near Northampton got onto M1, and was on my way. Not a single issue all the way to M25, got onto M25 and got round to J16 towards Cobham and traffic came to a stop. Sitting doing nothing, cars start to move, put foot on pedal to go and car dies, litterally, and wont start.

Now I am in the fast lane, so I pull over to the middle as far as I can and have no choice but to wait for recovery.
I forgot to mention an nice AA man stopped and took me to Cobham services to wait for Green Flag.

Symptoms:
Car turns over and sounds same as it does normaly but wont start or even hint to start
All electrics work without problem
No errors on dash or triangle, I cant remember what it said to begin with bt nothing now.
Looked under bonnet to see if there was anything obvious, nope, no oil visible, etc.

So, I have no money, wife is pissed now, because we have no money, cna anyone give me a list of things I can look at, I am an IT person not a mechanic, but Im not an idiot either so anything I can check to find the cause would be great

Thanks all in advance

1. This is mainly a USA forum, try volvoforums.org.uk.

2. Did you put any fuel in it since it died? Could be a faulty fuel gauge.

3. Fuel pump.
