Dipped Beam

2000 S80 T6

Problem: The low beam headlights periodically do not work.

The error in the driver’s information center is "dipped beam". I spoke with dealer and they recommended replacing the headlights. I have done this but error is still showing up.

RE: Dipped Beam

There could also be a bad connection at the Cem relay under the dash.
The relays tend to burn some and loose connection.

Remove the lower dash panel on the drivers side. Then look up to the left and you should see a box with a bunch of relays in it.Then try to look for some burnt marks on it.You can also drop it down. There is a tab to release it then you will have to swing it then slide it out.

RE: Dipped Beam

Tech or anyone with experience: I have followed your advice and found a series of relays and electronic modules "rubber banded" together. There is an electronic module 1/4" by 2" with burn marks on the CEM. The position in the "rubber banded" "series" is at the bottom, which has the tension. I noticed over the past couple of months I could tap the under panel of the dash and the head lights would work but in the last 2 weeks that stopped working. When I examined the "rubber band" I have found that the "rubber band" deteriorated to the point of "rubber band" failure. My questions are: 1 does Volvo dealers fix this problem using this technique; 2 what is the proper fix.

I have deduced the problem is a loose circuit due to over heating because the act of moving the CEM will activate the low beam head lights and the dipped beam error in the drivers information display will go off.

Thank you for your help.

The dealer would replace the CEM and the other part of the Relay box.

I have done it 4 times already.

If you pul the relay out and look the Connectors on the relay will most likely be burnt.

Tech, is this a common problem with Volvos? Do you know the cause of the problem? Has Volvo issuedt a service bulletin on this problem? Thanks for your help.

p.s. Is your intake manifold ford blue?

RE: Dipped Beam

It strikes some cars and others never have a problem.

I think it is because of Bad connections at the wires to relay.

No Service bulletin on it. There isn't all that many that see the problem but it is out there.

P.S.S Yes it is Ford Blue.
