Dipstick problems S80 T6
 

Ok guys and gals just bought 04 s80 t6 61150 miles, checked oil because im anal with my cars dip stick has brownish tint on it is that the beginnings of sludge? I pulled the crank case oil cap and a crusty brownish buildup is on the metal. Also i don't believe it was in my owners manual were should the oil be on the dipstick between the 6 X's or the top X is each X 1 quart of oil? my oil fell alittle over the third X does that mean 3 quarts low?

those engines take 6.5qts of oil. each of those x's is for 1qt and with your turbo you should keep it full all the time. that brownish tint is normal when you let it get low like that.

Are you sure that each X is a quart? I always keep it topped up but I had assumed the entire hatch area was one quart. All my other cars (mazdas, BMW etc) have similar hatch marks but the whole thing is 1 quart.

The most I recall being down is 1/3 quart but that showed two xxs low as I recall.

Per manual looks like 7.3 quarts in the 2.9 or 2.9 turbo. The whole 6 Xs look like 1.6 quarts.
