does a slipping transmission always mean a new one is needed

Have a 99 S80 with 120,000 miles and it just started slipping.Just tookit amile from the house and it made a whistling noise and then wouldn't move. Engine just reved. Made no noise under the hood when shifting from park to drive. Turned it off and then it made the normal noise when it was shifted into Drive. Itthen drove for 100 feet and then just slipped again and had to be towed home. Could this be a computer issue? Would a fluid and filter change help? Is it definatelyneeding a new transmission?

Thanks for the help.

Most likely the tranny is toast.

Thanks Tech,

This my sound like a stupid question but I have no error codes from the transmission. The dash says "Brake Failure Urgent Service Required". Is it possible that the computer would shut down the transmission because of the brake failure? I know this doesn't sound likely but this car has always had surprises. Just when I think I may understand this car it does something like this.

Thanks again,

Dave

It is possibly.
Most likely the ABS module is bad. That is why the light is on.
You can get it rebuilt for about $100.00.
Then you can try and see if it helps.
