eh oil?

Hey everybody,

Continueing on my previous post I have another problem ( https://volvoforums.com/m_141739/tm.htm), my car lost a hell load of oil on a 1150km trip, more than 1 liter. Now it was using 1 liter per 3000km, but this is outrages. I heard something about smoke comming out of the dipstick which is related to a problem. I opened up my dipstick and there was smoke comming out the first few seconds (just after I turned of the car). What can this be, i heard something about the PVC system (could anybody explain me what this is?)

Thanks in advance!

PCV: "Positive Crankcase Ventiliation"-made up of a bunch of parts. Theres a tool that the dealer uses-take the dipstick out and pop this gauge with a cone shaped fiting into the dipstick tube. It reads the pressure in there and let's know if the system is bad. Aside from physically seeing the PCV parts covered in oil and dirt. We that service at the shop frequently-as I am to understand it, the PCV system is kind of liek the catch-all for all the crap that the oil picks up durring its cycling. Infrequent oil changes/dirty oil constantly adds to this mess. It can also put extra, unnecessary, pressure on your engine seals...since a plugged PCV system has pressure that needs to be relieved somehow.

Depending on a shops labor, can be pricey becuase a lot of parts can be needed to be replaced. Theres an oil trap box/housing, various hoses that link off of it, a couple seals-and the manifold needs to come off so we replaced that gasket.

There are some pics here http://www.alanauto.com/pcv_job_855.htm of an 850 model getting the works-same idea with your S80-just different parts and undoubtedly your S80 will take a little longer to remove the parts. THe top 850 had to have the pan taken off and reconditioned-it was that bad.

Don't know if this does you any good! That smoke coming out the dipstick is something i'd want to pay attention and find out its cause though! I think you might be on the right track...

oke lucky break, all the problems which have arised were caused by the same thing. It was a bad bobine (dont know the correct english word, its the part which creates the electric peaks for the sparkplugs). This made the car run inproperly, make the lambasont light go on and possibly make it use oil. Its fixed now and i'm picking the car up in a few hours.

Thanks all :)
