EMISSIONS SYSTEM LIGHT ON NEW USED S80 T6
 

OK I just bought a 2000 S80 T6 with 69.000mi. I bought it with the check engine light on and the salespersone and I agreed that they would fix it and 30 warranty the vehicle.

I figured I had some time to play with being that I am aware of O2 sensor and the sensitivity of the emission on Volvos. WELL the NEXT day not only did the CHECK ENGINE light begin to "blink" but the car started to chug/spudder or misfire on acceleration.

I took it to the dealership and now they are telling me that the IGNITION COIL needs repalcement? Does this sound right to anyone? I know I should get the codes pulled but I am giving the dealership a chance.

Also, can any mechanic pull the codes or do I have to take it to a Volvo mechanic??? ANYBODY KNOW OF ANY COOL UPGRADES I CAN DO? BOTH ENGINE AND BODY [8D]

What they are telling you sounds about rigth.When a check engine light flashes that means a missfire.
I would try to talk them into replacing all of them so you don't have the problem again in a week or so.

My 1999 S80 T6 had the same "EMISSION SYSTEM SERVICE" warning with the blinking on misfire. I changed the plugs (many miles on plugs)and ran it hoping it wasn't the coils. A week later the Alternator went. FYI, you can get a missfire with a weak alternator as well as bad coils or plugs. The alternator is easy to test with a multimeter.

LOL well even though a weak alternator can give you misfires it was not the case for my s80. Replaced the alternator and am again having mis-firing sputtering engine. At least it is running now. Time to change the ignition coils. I just need this car to last the winter :(

After changing everything :( then finally the coil on cylnder 3 "Olga" is back to her old form. Hands down the fastest sedan in my neighborhood :)

I only had to replace the one coil, thanks to Volvo reading the codes I knew what cyl had the bad one. But it was visually obvious as well enclosed is a pic. there is a discoloration sort of matte (burnt looking) on the flat part. It doesn't look like much in this picture but it was glaring compared to the other coils.

I haven't turned a wrench in 10 years and bought a socket set on my way home from the junkyard with an alternator. These forums were invalueable in getting my only car running again. Not to mention saving me well over $1500 in dealer repairs. Thanks for keeping such a great resuorce!

Yeah, djtempest is correct about the codes telling you which cylinder is misfiring. I had only the one coil replaced on my '01 and it's been running fine for 9 months. (I had all six spark plugs replaced at this time as a PM step) The emissions warning is due to unburned fuel being dumped from the bad cylinder into the exhaust where the downstream O2 sensor detects the rich mixture.

FWIW... replacing the coil assembly is about as easy as changing the oil. Buy the part yourself & install it yourself to save some $$.

I think I ran into the same issue. Gonna take it to the dealer to confirm. For anyone that doesn't know how to change the coils on a T6 here is a good tutorial that is meant for the spark plugs but will work for the coils as well.

This is the same procedure for the coils. Each spark plug has a coil. So to replace a spark plug, you have to remove the coil. A very simple job.
