Error Message: Fuel Filler Cap Open / Loose
OK so this is kind of worrying me. I have gotten this error twice, after I got my ECM fixed. I never had this problem before I replaced the ECM. The error goes away after it was on for about a minute and a half. The error happened both times when I was on my way home on the same tank of gas, and I haven't gotten any gas between both times this error came up. So when I got home the first time, I unscrew the gas cap and put it back in, making sure that it clicks. Well last night this happened again and I decided to do some investigating... I wiggle the gas cap while it was still on the spout, with the car off, and it seems that it was on good and tight. I turn the car on and I don't have any errors. So, then I turn the car off and I go unscrew the cap and I don't really smell any fumes until I am about 2 - 3 inches away from the spout, that is after I have taken the gas cap off. With the cap on, I don't smell anything. I am pretty sure that's normal, but I can be wrong. What do you all think this could be? Could it be back pressure or is there something else that is causing this error to come up? Or could it have been that I got a bad batch of gas? If so how do I get it out? I mean the car is running great, but I am not sure what is causing this error to come up.

Is the seal on the cap cracked?

No the gas gap is brand new. I even inspected the spout and there are no cracks. There are some premade holes that I am not sure what their function is, but I think they are for ventalation. They are at the top of the spout right at the entrance of the tank.

Ok there can be a few other things it is. But there is some tests that have to be done.

So I'm guessing I would have to have the dealer do it then? Or can I do the tests myself?

Some shop will have to do it. They will have to smoke test the system or add pressure then check for a leak.

the evap hoses usually split
take your finger and check by the carbon canister usually you can feel the split, and either put on a new hose or use some black rtv to seal the split volvodoctor |

They pump smoke from a smoke machine into the hoses then watch for smoke to come out somewhere. Me myself I just use pressure and add pressure then pinch the hose. Then watch to see what the pressure does. If there is a leak I look for it with soapy water.

Neat! Here I am using a smoke machine for my movie, and they are using it for cars. I wonder if they are similar (as far as the product they used to create the smoke). Well you learn something new every day!

carbon canister location?
Where is the carbon canister on a 2000 s80 2.9 non turbo? Is it under the car on the passenger side or in the middle on top of the rear suspension?

It should be on the top of the suspension.
