Front Headlight replacement?

I have a 2002 S80... the passenger side front headlight is out. I went to replace it and the electrical socket sort of fell apart in my hands. So, I put the light in anyway and electrical taped it and went on my way. Yesterday, it shorted out and pulled down my battery to where I neededa jump. So, figure it's time for a permanent fix. Asked the dealer if I could get a new socket, but they say you need to buy a whole new complete headlight! Is that true? It seems to me I could fix this with like 10 bucks in parts from radio shack or something.... of course, the dealer wants $375 for the headlight and $200 for labor. I can get the headlight on line for $210, but I still can't believe you just can't change out just the electrical socket or something.

If yes, how hard is it to replace the whole headlight? I know you have to somehow get the bumper off... but don't know how to do that.

Thanks!

30678940 unless I looked it up wrong should be the part # for the headlight wiring harness that you will need to repair your healight.
Call the dealer and get a price.

I can't believe they won't sell you the harness and want to sell you the entire light.
Must be a parts guy that doesn't know his A** from a hole in the ground!!!

Search for S80 headlight replacement you should find the instructions for doing it.

Thanks for your help. I'm searching online for that part number and not finding it... is it because it is so specific? I will call the dealer like you suggested.

No problem.
Hopefully all goes well with the installation.

Ok... need some help. I have the harness now, and am trying to install.I will admit I'm a novice at this....

But, looking at the harness I ordered, I can't discern exactly where the light bulb would fit into it. I also lookunder the hood and itappears this harness is what hooks up to the back of a headlight assembly.... but again,I totally am new at this and really coulduseadvice from someonea little more car savvy.Anybody out there that can help????

RE: Front Headlight replacement?

Ok... still working on this. The back of the headlight assembly has a male connection. From that male connection goes 4 wires, 2 to the low beam and 2 to the high beam. The 2 to the low beam are like 6 inches long or so, and end at a socket where the lightbulb is inserted into. It is this socket that has disintegrated on my car.

Now, I have the part mentioned in this thread, but no where on the part is there anything that resembles this socket. there are 4 connectors on the part... perhaps it takes a different kind of bulb than the standard one that came with my S80, and that's why the sockets don't match?

Anyway you can post a picture of it?

RE: Front Headlight replacement?

Thanks... the first photo is of the part... the second of the socket from far away. And third up close. The yellow and black wires are from inside the headlight assembly and connect to the socket where the light fits in to. I have electrical taped the socket to hold it together, but the light is so hot it just melts through it or makes it brittle in no time flat.

Please let me know if other photos would be of use!

RE: Front Headlight replacement?

I think they gave you the wrong one.
That doesn't go inside the headlight.
I think that is the harness with the pigtail that goes between the cars harness and the headlight itself.

Do I have the right part number to reorder?

RE: Front Headlight replacement?

The part # on the harness in the picture is that the same as the one I gave you?
I thought I looked it up correctly.

I had the same issue. I removed the two conections from the deteriorated plug, reconnected them to the bulb and carefully taped them to avoid contact with the metal retaining clip. Replaced the fuse and all is well ... so far.

Where you from Caribbeansoul? I'm a Trinidadian going to school in FL...

Dealerships can be horrible when it comes to light parts... the lens for my headlight cracked once and Volvo of Tampa told me I would have to purchase the entire lighting assy to replace it... believe that crap...

Hi jmallie,

So, I just need to order the the headlight wiring harness part#30678940 and do what you did?

(I've got the s80 headlight part # 8693553 and 8693554 for my 99 S80)

jmallie 02-01-2010 08:27 AM

I think I have a part number for the harness. I will post it. I spliced in the new connector and it have been fine.

4 Attachment(s)
Finally, I replaced my headlights. I welded wires to connect insulators to my new headlights. I bought 2 insulators (#part: 978161, no. 6 in pic) and 6 pairs of cable terminal/seals (#part 978299/970773, no. 11/12 in pic). Then, I can connect the insulators to the existing harness.
