That good 'ol 105K Maintenance question
 

I have a 2000 S80 2.9 and I'm due for my 105k maintenance. I have just relocated to MD from NC and this will be the first time my car needs maintenance. Talk about sticker shock!!

I have called 3 places. Two quoted me around $1400 for the maintenance incl. timing belt, water pump, tensioner and idler.

The 3rd place quoted me $2270!! It includes all the above but they also recommend the oil fields (if leaking, but say I should do it if I plan on keeping the car)??, Thermostat and Serp belt I think.

I believe they charge $98 labor/hr. Here is a breakdown of the costs.

Maintenance - minus fuel filter (already done) $310
Timing belt, tensioner, Idler pulley - $790
Oil Fields - $470
Water Pump - $390
Thermostat - $220
Serp Belt - $90

Is all this even necessary?

My boyfriendwas quoted $450-$500 to do the same 105k, timing belt and water pump at my old repair shop in NC. I need to hear this with my own ears though. I understand the labor charge may be a lot cheaper but this seems like a HUGE difference.

Sorry this is so long, please help me. I think I might be taking a 6 hr road trip to NC for this service.

just because you are due for maintenance because of certain mileage doesnt mean you have to do it, if you want to do it just because and have the money that you wanna spend then just take the yellow pages (or whatever you call the information book over there in the states ) and call like 10 mechanics and get the cheapest price...volvo specialized mechs are more expensive but they know more about these cars

if you ask me those prices are out of wack, the DEALER charges 100/h (and thats canadian) i have no idea what oil fields the mech is referring to but that sounds like a scam already, you gota remember if the mech is taking things apart to do lets say the timing belt then other things become more accesible and doung them while he is there anyways should not take that much money

also you can go online and buy the parts yourself for a lot cheaper then the mech is going to charge yuo and just pay labour

there are plenty of options, i would not bother and not do anything at all unless you have a problem

oh and you should know, these forums are a bit slower than some other car forums volvos are not the most "car enthusiast" popular cars so there is less people talking about them on the internet i guess...

Thanks for your response. I'm not exactly sure if they said oil fields but I they said if I plan on keeping the car I should do that b/c if they leak onto the timing belt which "will" happen according to them, then I will have to get the belt done again.

I'm not too pressed to get some of the stuff done but I do want to get the timing belt done considering some people on here think it should be done at 70k. I dont have the money for a new Engine let alone a new car.

I was recommended to the expensive place b/c I hear they are honest but expensive so I kind of trust what they are saying, I just don't want to pay.

Talk about $rice Gauging...!!!

I think I would be looking for a Good Independant Mechanic that specializes on Volvos first before sinking that kind of money into that place..

You can look up those parts on eeuroparts.com and find that they are not even close to those prices..buy the parts yourself and have someone install them for you.

to have a base reference call several volvo dealers and find out what they charge an hour and what the timing belt job would cost ( or whatever it is that you wanna change) that should be your base price because no one should charge more than the dealer in general

then call different mechanics and ask for the same thing, as how much just for the labor if you get the parts yourself, then compare with the price volvo gave you, and go from there

on my previous car it was cheaper to change the tranny fluid at the dealer than at a tranny specialized shop

Yes way off.
Best thing is to look the parts up your self then go from there for pricing.

But check around some more.

The dealership and a foreign car repair shop quoted me $1400. The $2300 place works on volvos and maybe toyotas i think.

I've been doing some research and right now I can't think of the site but it estimated $780 or something like that for the timing belt and water pump in this area. I compared some of the other repair quotes too and i noticed a differece.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy by thinking they were charging way too much money.

Are there any non-volvo parts I should try to stay away from? I know my volvo specialist shop in NC only uses Volvo parts which is the only reason that some of their repairs may be costly b/c I always thought of them to be reasonable.

Check the site FCPgroton.com they carry almost all OEM parts for the car. Some parts they offer OEM and aftermarket. Also if they don't show a part they might be able to still get it.

Thanks for all the input. After getting a quote from1 more place here for $1750, I've decided that I might as well take the road trip to NC to my old mechanic. It will cost $780-$850 to do the maintenance, timing belt, tensioner, idler and water pump. A $600+ savings is well worth the 6 hour drive and I will do it next month when I have 4 days in arowoff of work and get to spend valentines day with my sweety all in the same trip. Works for me!! :D

I hope there aren't any problems between now and then because my check engine light has been on for over a week now and I don't know why. It isn't been acting up or anything. The light just came on and I hadn't gotten any gas directly prior to it, maybe a few days or so.

I really dont want to pay $100-$200 just for them to do the diagnostic test here.

If it runs fine and the fuel milage is the same you should be fine.

I just had the 105k mileageservice on my '01 S80, the car actually had 115k miles at time of service. Took it to a local shop that tends to get a lot of Saabs and volvo jobs... Anyway, for $590 i had the timing belt, serpentine, waterpump, tensioner and pulley replaced. The water pump was in great condition, the tensioner showed some age, and the timing belt definitely showed it's age. The roots of the teeth had started to delaminate, which means the belt was at the near end of it's life. You need to get the work done, and driving to your local garage would be a good idea compared to the other quotes you've received.

Close to NY? :) Sorry, about as far from NY as one can get in the lower 48. The shop is out in Portland, OR. I live in Iowa and drove toPortland for Christmas to be with family.
