HELP please engine temp light keeps coming on
 

hi i have a volvo s80 2000reg
i have a problem with the engin temp light coming on when i do short runs and my engin stalls
but thenit takes me about 30secs to a minute torestart the engin but then the light goes off and the car runs fine what is wrong with my car any ideas please?

right what is happening is that there is a red triangle light coming on on the dash and the message high engine temp going on and off and the engine temp gauge goesinto the red and the car starts to loose power and start judderingand she sometimes stalls on me and this will happen for the first 5mins or so but then she goes normal the triangle light goes off so does the warning message and the temp gauge goes back to the normal temp
and it doesntnormally happen againtill the next day when the engine has been turned off for several hours
does this make any sence?

I would try to have the codes pulled and checked from there.
Sounds like a bad thermostat.
