HID Headlights?

A friend of mine with a "connection" got ahold of some very expensive HID headlights he's willing to give me. However, after doing some reading, I'm not sure I want to put HID bulbs in halogen headlights. From what I've read it is illegal (yes/no?) and the light floods all over the place, blinding on-coming cars. I've noticed, however, that the S80 lights are angled down an awful lot and I'm wondering if that'll prevent the lights from being too obtrusive to on-comers.

I'm not really interested in buying projection headlights, but can anyone provide some insight on this matter? I don't really have any complaints about my headlights, but if I can go brighter, why not?

Thanks,

Jason

Not sure about Illegal or not I have them in my(Yellow 850) and no problems at all. I angled mine down a hair and no complaints at all from other drivers.

Where did you purchase your HID kit from tech? While I'm not really considering one at the moment for the s80 I am considering for 2 of the vehicles in Trinidad... I can find loads of those cheap kits on ebay but I prefer to find something a bit more reliable...

I assume with the right angle, theres no need to retrofit projectors...

Mine were given to me. But I know some people that bought off of e-bay with no problems at all.

When I can finally find a set of OEM foglights I am going to try one of these sets. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=370078765414

Alright cool. My friend told me he'd need to make some sort of bracket to hold the ballast (sp?), which I guess is a converter, but that they'd be simple to install and remove. I guess I'll give them a try. Has anyone else noticed the strange angle of their headlights? Both the regular headlights and the highbeams are great on the car, but the regular headlights only project about 20 feet in front of the car or so.

not shure what the rules and regalations are in your part of the country but here in uk it is illegal to put hid in normal reflector lenses it wont take long for mr police officer to pull us over as the difference in lighting really stands out . also our vehicles wont pass its yearly inspection (mot) also on my s60 it will give a bulb warning message constantly because of the voltage drop

On the other hand, in trinidad regardless of if it is legal or not nothing is ever enforced so I dont think its really a question of legality...

I guess if I had to go with the HID kit il go ebay shopping, I wont pay 3 times as much for a kit with a lifetime warranty when I can buy 2 or 3 kits for that same price..

I actually checked out sharphid and I was decently impressed with what I saw and the lifetime warranty... the thing is, is it worth twice the price considering I can put HID's on 2 cars? I guess il decide about it when the time comes, closer to christmas..

i put 55watt HIDs in reflectors. you have to drill a 1/2 inch-ish hole in the lamp cover. the ballasts can be zip-tied to any number of places.

i found the lamps flood in front of the car too much, and the light is scattered and nonuniform. i wasn't really happy with the result, and since one ballast shorted out within a week, i put my halogens back in without a qualm.

i have an extra set of headlamps, and bought another HID kit to try a projector retrofit project. i'm just looking for the proper projectors to use.

FWIW my experience buying hi-K halogens on ebay had been crappy. i bought two kits and one had a DOA bulb, and the other died very quickly. YMMV.
