Looking at buying 00 S80 N/A

Hey everyone....I have never owned a Volvo or even driven in one until today. I fell in love with the S80 I test drove, but the forums all over the net have me petrified to even think about buying one.

Most of the problems I read about are the 99 S80 T6's. Are there any common horrors with the 2000 S80 N/A?

The one I am looking at is looaded with Leather, moonroof, the whole 9. Body is flawless, 90K miles - $9950.00 - KBB is $12,500

Are there any problematic areas I should look into before considering this vehicle.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You, and hopefully I will be back much more.....

Dave

They had about half of the Bugs form the 1999's worked out for the 2000's. So some of the problems the 1999's have the 2000's have to.

The best ones and the 2002 and newer.

Thank You tech...

If anyone has any specifics on what to look for in the transmission area, please let me know. I am relatively tech savy, so minor issues shouildn't be an issue.

Thanks Again

2 things you definitely have coming up are timing belt at 100K. You will also probably have an issue with the oil pan "O" rings which will run $600-$700 dollars.

The trans and ETM are a crap shot, may or may not have problems. Keep beating them down on price and expect to have at least the first 2 things I mentioned done.

Also, check the top enging mount. Bottom line get it cheap with the expectations of the maintenance on a 100K S80.

Back in August I purchased 2000 S80 (113 k) for $8,300 and like you.. also fell in love with the car. So far other than oil changes, I have only replaced one tire and just recently needed to replace a tie rod. It passed inspection with flying colors but I was told it will soon need front brake pads and rotors. I don't know if it's true or not, but the impression I got from the repair shop was that the rotors were ok, but because it's a Volvo, it's best to replace the rotors as too. Anyway I am seriously thinking of learning to do brake work myself since I read somewhere that S80's go through brakes every 10,000 miles.

I'm still glad I bought the car, it's just that I am always waiting for the shoe to drop. My advice is that if you do decide to buy an S80, is (like Familyman said) get it as cheap as possible. Try and find a S80 with as much service and repair history as possible. And I would also recomend purchasing an extended warranty. I got one for mine, it's for 3 years, has good coverage, and it only cost $550. A bargain considering what repair costs are these days. While I still hope I never have need to use it, it's still better than wishing I had purchased one.

Good luck in your decision!

Rex
