LOUD '09 S80 Power Steering - Solved!!

Hi. New to the forum. We are on our second s80 and have had a good experience with our first. Currently, we own an '09 S80 and it developed a loud power steering groan when turning and just sitting idle. The mechanic put in a new pump, but that did not stop the noise. $575 later. There are no obvious leaks anywhere, as I was thinking it might be the rack and pinion leaking, but that seems unlikely given there is no fluid anywhere to be seen. Any other thoughts would be appreciated!

My first post on this forum

I have been thinking about buying a S80 for my son.

i have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 with the same powertrain as the S80 3.2 AWD

The power steering should be the same for both

as for the answers to your question the power steering reservoir has a filter screen in the bottom and the screen gets clogged and then the pump gets loud

Note: the fluid should be replaced as well, it does’t last forever

take a look at this link

Freel2.com - View topic - Noisey steering pumps?

Here is the video from the link
it’s not my video
the pentosin fluid that is specified isn’t red as shown in the video
i use CHF 202 (you can buy it from Volvo also)

good luck

Paul

I ordered the reservoir and fluid and will give that a try.

I ordered a reservoir from Parts Geek for $32 and the fluid from them as well for $16. I installed the reservoir today and the car sounds like new! Very easy to do. Suck out the fluid from the reservoir, remove one hose clamp and a pinch fitting at the bottom of the reservoir; put in the new one in reverse order and fill to max with the fluid. I turned on the car and spun the steering wheel back and forth 20 times to get the fluid worked in and the air out. That was it!

Trader,

That's excellent news!!!!!

On to the next task

Have you thought about replacing your Thermostat?

Failures have been reported at about 10 years

Some information about replacing the Thermostat

Freel2.com - View topic - 3.2 Thermostat replacement

See the link below for more information about common issue with older I6 3.2 (note: this is for AWD if you have FWD then you can skip some of these)

For reference you just completed

9. Power steering fluid and reservoir replaced due to noisy heavy steering

And I am recommending that you look into

8. Thermostat - replaced mine at 10 years (also replaced two coolant hoses)

The list is mine but as you can see from my post I collected the information from other posters and I haven't done all of the items on the list

Good Luck

Paul
