Low Beam Modification
 

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a 2000 S80. I did my research and found all the common problems. I considered all of it and made sure I had a nice warranty before I bought it from the dealer. I got it out the door, tax, lic, fees, warranty for 17k. I feel that is very fair, especially with CA tax!

Anyway my question is the low beams don't seem, to extend from the front of the car enough to sufficiently see, in my opinion. What is the best way to get the light to extend more? They are bright enough just not "long" enough.

I noticed the little metal piece covering the bulb itself. Can I bend that out of the way or cut it off? Or maybe bend the whole bulb and metal piece up? I really have no idea what to do. I'm sure there is a way to fix this maybe even easier than what I am prepared to do. Any help would be greately appreciated. Thanks Again!

There is adjustments on the light just adjust it up a little.

Also consider the Silverstar H7 bulbs. They truly make a difference!

Can you go into a little more detail on the modification to the light? You said "On the left" Is that on the left side of the light unit while facing it or in referance to the front of the car?

Oh yeah and I ordered some bulbs off ebay, they claim to be 8500k, we'll see what that does. What I am thinking is it won't increase the distance of the headlight just make it brighter where it is already lite. What do you think?

On the back of each headlight there is adjustment screws. Some you need to use a phillips screwdriver and others you need to use a socket. Turn the adjuster and it will adjust the headlight.

Are there any pictures that anyone has taken of this that will show the adjustment screws? I have a 2002 S80 and there is a big black cover behind the bulb, do I take that off?

what are the miles and may I ask what, in dollars was your purchase price?

If you are looking for upgraded bulbs after you re-aim the light forget the Sylvania Silverstar.. It makes barely any difference and costs far too much..

Google Philips X-Treme Vision H7.. Honestly the BEST halogen bulb I have ever seen in terms of light output.. Running it on my S80 and two of my other vehicles..

940 front bulb, thinking of swapping.
 

Hi my Volvo 940 main, front headlamp bulb has just gone and I was thinking of upgrading both lamps with a Philips product called "Extreme Power" or something equally dynamic.

Anyway it claims to be twice as bright as standard bulbs and I do feel my front headlamps are a little weak. It costs £ 30 compared £ 3 for originals.

Anybody got any thoughts on this, am I tinkering and will I get into trouble?

I have it in my volvo, its a nice improvement, is 100% legal and will give you no trouble..

Buy it from one of the UK sellers on ebay, that way you know your getting the real thing.. Shouldnt be more than about $30 for a pair

Finally tested the new bulbs
 

Got the car out into the countryside at night, finally, they are better but only about 30% better!

I recently purchased a 2000 S80 and had the same experience with low-beams pointed too low. I raised them vertically and thought I'd follow up on this thread with a picture.
White is showing direction.
Yellow arrow - not sure if this one is necessary but did it anyway. Unscrewed the item counter clock-wise.
Red arrow - Turn this adjustment screw clock-wise to make the beam higher. It takes a 6mm hex socket.
Doing this adjusted the headlights up very slowly, but surely. My right beam seemed to adjust up and to the right a bit, not sure why that was though.

Found this thread whilst googling the same problem, but in my case it's an '02 S80. The setup is slightly different to the photo above. There's a plastic vertical adjuster on top of the headlight unit (still a 6mm socket though). You get at it through a hole in the plate above the headlight. Can't see the horizontal adjuster but I'm sure there must be one - will have a look during daylight hours.....

Oh, and as for bulbs, I've just fitted a set of OSRAM Night Breaker Plus H7 bulbs. There is a huge improvement in brightness compared to the (probably very old) existing bulbs.

Where is the adjuster
 

I have a 1999 S80 and I to have lights that are to low in front. Whe exactly is the adjuster?
