Default Mass Air Flow Sensor

Engine code said mass air flow sensor bad, so I got a new sensor, opened the hood and found out that when the people did the oil change, they did not put the air box back on correctly. In fact, the screen on the mass air flow sensor has dirt, dust, bugs and that fuzzy stuff from flowers on it. I put the new sensor end and worked like a charm. My question, could the lack of the oil company putting on the air box correctly, thus allowing raw air to enter thr mass floe sensor cause its failure?

Possible but how long ago was it they did it?

It will usually take a really long time for it to mess it up.
