Oil Leak Problem from Heads Help
 

I recently installed new spark plugs on my S80 and I mistakinly removed all the bolts around the coil packs on 4 of the cylinder heads instead of just the 1 that is needed to take the coil pack off. About a week later my car started leaking oil around these bolts which I had removed that go directly into the heads of the engine. I ensured they were tight and cleaned the oil up and the leaking continues. Any suggestions or anyone every seen this problem? I'd say im losing about a 1/4 of a quart a week and I'm gettin a bad smell of oil as its sittin in the traps by the coil packs and burning. Help!?

Tryin remove the bolts you took out, and put sealer on them..

hmmm, I have the same problem. Oil appears under the cam cover without any clue where it comes from. I've got a new oil cap w/ seal and new breather box. I replaced all of these things thinking they could've been the culprit, but they weren't. You just brought new hope into my life. Tech do you concur, if so how much $$ are you talking? Could I do it? or will Ineed to go finish my degree in rocket science first?

whats sort of sealant would you recomend? I tried using PTU tape I believe its called which is used for ceiling plumbing pipes with thread and it didnt work (probably melted with the head tho).

He might have broke the sealer loose that seals the cam cover to the head. If so the only way to really get it to seal properly is to have the cam cover removed and resealed.

A very bit PITA to do.
A special tool will be needed to lock the Cams into position.

Try resealing the bolts with anarobic sealer from the dealer, i doubt you broke the seal loose on the cam cover by removed those few bolts, there like 20bolts holding that thing on, plus when there all removed you still have to break the seal.. Not saying you didnt, but highly unlikely. also you would need to lock the cams if removed. I've done it without locking the cams, but im just that good:D. Seriously tho. Is what will happen if you remove the cam cover, the tension on the timing belt side will pull down causeing the back end of the cams to popup.

So your best bet is to let the dealer do it.

I still say what I said above. If it is coming through the bolt hole the seal between the cam cover and the head was broke when the screws were out.

Not exactly sure I would say about 6 to 7 hours labor.

I spent a couple of hours today cleaning all the oil build up from the last week or two (hadnt had time to take care of the problem). I only removed the 4 bolts from 3 of the 6 cylinders (12 bolts total) and its clear the oil build up was way greater by those bolts than the rest. I got some 500 degree oil repelling gasket sealant and coated all the bolts in it and replaced them. I did break one of the bolts unforunarley last time by over tightening it. I filled that bolt hole with a jb weld like liquid steel. and a coat of sealant before that. I did find for sure the oil is coming from the bolt holes. Before I filled the broken bolt hole with the sealant and liquid steel I let the engine run and saw the oil coming out of that single hole. Hopefully the liquid steel and sealant will be enough 2 stop that hole from leaking but the rest seem like there holding the oil. I'll let you guys know if I still have a leak tommrow.

yeah tell us how it went. Geez, can't believe something so simple gives so much grief. I do remember taking off some bolts when I changed the plugs a long time ago, but the oil didn't start comming for a year or so.

well one day of driving and I just have a few drops seeping out of the hold which I filled with the liquid steel. I may have 2 drill some of that out and fill the top of the hold with a layer of sealant. It seems to have stopped the problem but they bolts didnt start leaking on me for a few days the 1st time I took em out. I'll keep ya updated tho and let you know if they start leaking again and ill post the name of the sealant I used if it holds up.

Now when you put some of the repelent sealant did you remove the bolts and coat them with the sealant, then put them back? or did you unbolt them a little and put some in. I'm cleaning mine today to see which bolts are the ones leaking. I'll have it totally repaired later on, but a temporary fix would be nice.
