Oil Trap

After religiously changing my oil every 3000 miles, I have been told my oil trap is clogged because of the carbon build up.. this doesnt sound right to me seeing how this happened one week after my oil change with them. It probably is the oil trap because the oil is flowing up the dipstick (popped it off) and oil leaked everywhere on the engine, power steering tank, coolant tank, etc.

My question is how long can I drive it like that? and how hard is it to do? I see the parts cost 80$ and the labor is like 500$.

Thanks

What does your oil level show on the stick after you let it sit on level ground for 20 minutes or so with the engine off..? and how clean is the oil on the stick..?

Sounds to me like they didn't even drain the oil, just added oil..I've never heard of an Oil Trap..? I would suggest you drain the oil yourself and then see how much oil is showing on the stick then. If there is any on the stick..could be sludge buildup..if thats the case I would suggest you get some Penzoil 10 w 30 run it in the engine for 1000 miles three different times to clean out the sludge w/ filter. then put your normal oil back in with New filter. Make sure you don't overfill at anytime. Dio you have any oil leaks around the Intake manifold..? This is a good sign it's overfilled..Good Luck

its clean when I checked my cars oil. Do they make any additives for this that might dissolve whats clogging it, or something that may temporarily fix this? no leaks on the intake manifold.

When you take your Oil Cap off does it have SLUDGE on the bottom of it..?

Yes there is an oil trap. Its part of the pcv system and if it gets clogged up will create pressure in the crankcase which could pop your dipstick out. It has happened with these cars for sure. It's a pain in the ass to change though. You need to take the intake manifold off to get to it. I believe there is a detailed how to somewhere here. If it is the pcv and/or oil trap clogged there is no way around it.

I think it's easier on the non turbo but here's a diagram for you. Fun times. I think it took me about 6 hours but I had some problems with an intake bolt stripping and the plastic pcv hose cracking. Yippee.

so there has been no further leaking of oil.... I have a feeling they overfilled it? is that a possibilty? I change my oil too much for this oil trap problem to happen..

I guess it is possible.
