Okay to drive 02 without power steering fluid

02 S80 T6

It was very cold last week where I live. I'm pretty sure the power steering fluid froze (because it now looks like a thick gunk) and the rest leaked out somewhere.

It's going in tomorrow to be fixed. Can I drive the car the 8 miles to the shop without doing more damage or should it be towed?

You probably could; I was in a similar situation in the past. However, why not just take a different car to Autozone or something, grab some ATF fluid and put that in the power steering tank just to be safe for those 8 miles?

That's what I was thinking, but when I took off the cap to the power steering fluid reservoir, there was a loud pop, as if the reservoir was under a lot of pressure. There was only some thick gunk in there that looked like a slurpee gone bad. I don't want to put more fluid in there, possibly sending that gunk through the pump.

We've got motor club coverage anyhow, so the tow won't cost anything more than a hassle.
