oxygen sensor

The check engine light came on so I took it to the dealer. They said all 4 oxygen sensors - bank 1 & 2, front and back were starting to go bad. $1300 to replace. 1. do I need to replace these?. 2. I looked on EBAY and they were selling universal sensors for 2001 s80 for $25. That doesn't sound right. 3. Can they be taken out and cleaned? Please help with advice. Thank you

RE: oxygen sensor

I would'nt use anything but the Volvo sensors, unless you want to pay someone to do the job twice.

I doubt it needs all 4 sensors, but it's not that uncommon to replace all of them when you do this job, especially if you have high mileage, and especially since it is fairly time consuming to access them on this system.

As far as the price, and a second opinion, shop around to an independant Volvo or European shop.

You cannot clean them.

Thank you for the response. I also saw some sensors at Autozone for $80. I'm afraid if I replace them with anything but Volvo sensors I may be asking for trouble. The dealer said they are OK now but will need to be replaced sometime in the future. Any idea how long they will last once they start to go?

Could be tomorrow or next year.

When they fail will the car be able to function? What could be some indications they are going bad or will it shut down.

About four months ago my CIL came on and autozone said two of mine were bad. I bought some CRC Mass Airflow Cleaner Cleaned all four of them and have had no problems since then. There were some instructions posted on how to do it. I am no mechanic yet was able to do it with no problems. The can of cleaner was around 5.00 so it is worth a try.

I purchased a vehicle specific oxygen sensor from advance for my s80 and it worked fine and looked exactly like what came out of it (bosch, with heat shield, and the correct plug in on the end)
