Possible Wheel Bearing Going Out - Rear

Sounds like I may possibly have a rear wheel bearing going out on the S80? Called my trustworthy mechanic (buddy's dad been taking my cars to his shop for about 10 years) and from what I could describe over the phone to him he said it sounded like the culprit may be a wheel bearing which was what I had also been thinking since after we drive the car for a little while and park it I can smell that something has heated up on the drivers side rear wheel. It has a bit of a shimmy at low speeds that seems to get louder when on the highway or at higher speeds. It also has what I can only describe as a (WAH WAH WAH) lol sound the faster you travel down the highway. The tires are brand new so I don't think they are out of balance or anything? Anyway, I drop it off Weds. night and he will be looking at it on Thursday. Any thoughts, suggestions, comments?

Thanks,

Cameron

I haven't seen an S80 rear wheel bearing go out as of yet but possible.
I would check the tires first. even though they are new they might still be bad.

That was what one buddy suggested? I am dropping it off at my buddies dad's shop tomorrow night so we shall see?

Well, cancelled my appointment for now (due to weather). I am going to get the back of this thing up in the air this weekend and take a look myself. So Tech, you haven't seen many wheel bearings go out on the S80's? Mine does have 230k miles so I thought maybe that would have been it? Hopefully, we can figure something out when we get her up in the air this weekend?!?

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD BE CHECKING WHILE I GOT HER UP IN THE AIR THIS WEEKEND?

Just look everything over good.
Do you have any knocking from the rear of the car?
If so check the rear sway bar links known to go bad.

I have replaced the front wheel bearings but never the rears on the S80.
If it is bad you will hear it when you turn the wheel with it off the ground.

I would have a look at the parking brake. A dragging shoe could cause the noise and the heat. The brake is the drum type built into the rotor so the rotor will have to come off to inspect.

Tech - Thanks once again, I will look everything over well, check the rear sway bar and bushings (if applicable). No real "knocking sound from the back? Just the feel of something out of balance or somewhat of a "wobble" but notthe kind as-if the wheel were going to fall off or anything. It's hard to explain in words on a forum darn it ;)

Magak - Thanks for the tip, I will make sure to check the parking brake also. I plan on checking the rear pads and rotors too so it shouldn't be too hard to pop off the rotor and look in there.

Okay, I checked the tranny fluid via the dipstick last night and it was way over the full line? Should I drain and replace the oil? Maybe that could be causing some issues? It seems to shift just fine and everything?

I would drain atleast some and see what happens.

Okay, thanks, I will try that. Start in small increments and go from there.

But you might have to suck it out of the dipstick tube with something. There is no drain plug in the pan.

Do you think I should just change it or have it changed. I'm trying to think of what to use to get it out of the dipstick? Rig up some kind of attachment for the shop vac?

Do you have any friends that are techs?
There is an air fed brake bleeder that you can use.
Also there is a siphon tool you could buy but pretty expensive.

Yes, I just have to drive back up to my hometown (about 60 miles one-way). None down here close to where I live now and he is closed on weekends. Think I could use something like a hand-pump brake bleeder for a motorcycle? I have one of those and just thought about it..lol..A shop vac...lmao wow I need to keep the cigarette in the right hand :)

Okay, so we jacked her a$$ end up..lol..and took the wheels off (lug bolts instead of lug nuts were new to me, pretty cool). My buddy and I were amazed at how clean the undercarriage of the vehicle was! Anyhow, everything seemed tight under there. We did however notice the passanger side rear rotor was not spinning smoothly like one should. So after removing the rotor we saw that two of the srpings in the parking brake drum were brokenand that one of the top brake shoe was worn at an angle from being out of line. Thought we were all clear and was only going to have to spend a few dollars but after removing the parking brake parts we noticed that the hub was not spinning smoothly. It felt as-if there were flat spots in the bearing. We did not take anymore of it apart becasue my buddy was wanting to get some work done on his open wheel roadster. I left the parking brake items off and put the rotors, calipers and wheels back on for now. So what I am assuming is that I will need to purchase the following: parking brake pad kit with springs, and a wheel bearing and (seal) if applicable? Do any of you know if the bearing is sold seprately or must I buy the hub with the bearing already pressed in and is there a seal also? I am just learing Vadis so I am going to check there but I thought someone may know off hand. Also, I know there is a thread with parts companies online but whom do you all prefer, I would like to go genuine Volvo parts but if pricing is crazy then I am also open to aftermarket sources. Thanks in advance, Cameron.

Tech, I didn't get the chance to drain any of the tranny fluid. It seems maybe 1 quart high. Should I be concerned and get it out of there or in your opinion will I be safe for now. I am not planning on driving it again until I get the parts ordered and installed (hopefully this week/weekend) unless the weather gets really bad again. I am just wondering for future refrence.

Try to get out asap.
The bearing should come as hub and bearing all in one.
Navigate around vadis you will enjoy the info on there.

TOOK YOUR ADVICE AND FOUND ALL THE PARTS ON VIDAS AND CREATED A PARTS LIST THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS:

PART # DESCRIPTION QTY

9173872 REAR WHEEL HUB 1
274271 BRAKE SHOE KIT 1
30645831 RETAINING SPRING 2
3546028 RETURN SPRING 2
8634925 BRAKE PAD KIT 2
9485144 RETURN SPRING 2

SOUND ABOUT RIGHT?
