Radio Removal

I have an HU-801 in my girlfriend's 99 S80 and for some reason the 4disc changer stopped reading the CDs. You can switch through the different CDs and even skip to each track on each CD, but it makes a horrendous noise (as though its trying to switch discs) and comes up with CD ERROR on the screen. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Could I remove the headunit and see if one of the CDs got wedged in somewhere? Heard of this before? Any way to manually get the CDs out?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

PS - How would I remove the headunit? (<-- been searching and would like to remove regardless)

It is kind of a pain to remove the radio.
First remove the pen holder panel under the A/C controls. That will allow you access to the bottom screws for the A/C panel.Remove the screws and then slide the A/C panel straight out.You might have to push down some on the top of the A/C control unit for it to come loose. Then you will see the screws to remove the radio.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot in a couple of days. I got most of the other stuff I needed to get done to the car completed already. Power Booster is left though and possibly a starter. It'll be nice to get the kinks worked out on this car since she likes it so much to begin with.

Thanks again!

When I was trying to remove it, it was indeed very painful. There are 4 metal "teeth" that hold the center console in place, fixated to the bottom A/C part. First, you have to unscrew the bottom. Then, you have carefully remove the plastic cover covering the shifter. Then, you need to unscrew 2 screws (one left, one right) of the center console. These will be at the top of where the A/C part was. Afterwards, carefully tilt it upward and wiggle it back and forth. Be careful not too apply too much pressure as it may snap. After that, it should come out with ease and just unplug the HU.

99s80t6, did you figure out what was wrong with your HU-801? Was the cd just stuck?

Any word on whether or not you were able to remove cd's and get it working again? I have same problem too. Good to go as far as instructions for removal, but don't want to start until i know whether it's a possible fix or a replacement issue.
