reasonable price?
 

I have a 99 S80 non turbo with 57,000 miles. I am thinking of doing the timing belt. I went to an independent mechanic who was recomended and he gave the following prices:

timing belt and labor......247

If I choose to do the water pump also the following breakdown:

timing belt ...58.00
coolant and pump...184 (Pump was 160 coolant is 20)
labor....306

For a total of 548


Is it really necessary to do the water pump and if so does it seem reasonable the prices? He is recommended and seemed honest, and spent time to give me the breakdown.

Did you inspect the belt to see its condition? I know it is a 99 but 58,000 miles is generally about 30,000+ earlier than is recommended for that job.
Generally its agreed that if doing the timing belt, you should do the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley as well. See this link

While you are already in there, what is the condition of the serpentine belt. When I did my T-belt job at about 100,000 miles, I did the S-belt as well, but did not do the water pump.

I was worried more about that it was a 99. Is it that difficult to inspect the timing belt?? I mentioned it and he kind of didnt want to be bothered.

if it was my car and had the original timing belt thats ten years old, I would change it, serp belt and other items that are in relation too, I got my wife a 2000 s-80 with 100,000 miles, and without knowing if the t-belt had been replaced, I replaced it a.s.a.p., cheap insurance, having said that, my buddy came over while I was doing the belt service and remarked that he really should do the belt on his b.m.w., well he didnt and two weeks later it gave out, what an expensive mess he had to deal with.

well im not saying to cheap out on the belt, not by any means, but take a look at it. See tech's sticky at the top of the forum. To check it, if I remember right, just use a torx and take off the plastic cover on top the engine and on top of the timing belt cover, you can inspect it there. Look at tech's pictures for references of what is bad.

Also, note that the parts are probably a lot cheaper if you buy them yourself and then give your mechanic to do the job.. at least this way you know the parts are OEM.

Also, from what I get, the volvo t-belt job can be a tricky one, so only do it with someone you are very confident in.. last thing you need is post-op issues.

For what its worth, I just had my timing belt & pulleys, H2O pump and both drive axle's replaced for $350 labor only, I supplied the parts. I think I paid around $180 for OEM timing parts and $55 for a pump. I would do the pump while you're in there. It's not all the much more and is a nice peace of mind.

I went to FCPgroton. Other then the timing belt and water pump, do I also need the timing belt idler pully, Tensioner pully and the tensioner damper? All total the parts came out to $350

you SHOULD do the tensioner pulley and idler pulley, no need to do the damper.

Also, dont forget the serpentine belt.. its easy to take a look at and look for cracks.

I just checked IPDUSA and they have the timing belt kit which includes the belt, idler pully, tensioner pully and the damper for 210
