Rev bouncing on 01' s80
 

Could anyone please explain why the revs on a 01' s80 bounces whenever trying to park the car into place? They seem to only bounce when im trying to maneuver the car a very low speeds.

Since i have bought the car on 89,000kms (now currently on 93,000kms) i have not changed the spark plugs. Could the spark plugs be the cause of the problem? Or anything else? Please help.

could be a dirty ETM (electronic throttle module), or possibly a recall was issued on the ETM for the car/a software update was required, not sure what years... but that sounds a likely culprit..

Thanks for the information 'Nicolaselias'. Is the ETM easy to clean? And where does it sit?

I should mention... do a full tune up on the car first... definitely wont do any damage to change the plugs, air filter, cabin air filter etc and then see if it still happens...

you can go back and edit posts, so no need to double post,,,, basically it could be nothing , because then you are parking you are standing still almost (low speed) and turning the wheel requires more fluid pressure by the steering pump, thus more load, and higher rpm for the belt to spin the steering pump,

park you car and while standing turn the wheel left or right all the way, you will see this

or you have bad injectors or something dirty in the fuel, i duno , intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose

Oh i see, lol i didn't notice that, thanks for that, that may be the problem i still have to service the car so it can work to it's full potential, i have just recently got the car so i will get to it as soon as i have the time. But thanks for the help 'nicolaselias' and 'andrei3333' :)

Sounds like a throttle body problem Its under warrenty would have it checked they replaced mine about 6 months ago and now I am getting s surge at about 40 mph tack will jump up and down going to carry it back in

Clasic problem with ETM bad , There is a NHTSA safety recall
in the USA. I had to threaten a new NHSA investigation
before they would refund me for a repair I had on it
which did fix the problem.
Hurry though I think there are age and mileage
restrictions, Do a search on the "other" site

just call volvo usa and give them your vin, they will tell you if there are any outstanding recalls...its not the etm, i dont think

I disagree, I almost drove though my garage door
before I beleived my wife about this problem.
It has to do with a thin film resistoer being worn
and sending erratic ignals to the ECM
Even if the dealer worked on it once there is no
saying it was done "permanantly".
The initial repair involves leaning it and altering
some parametrs in the ecu. If that doesn't work then
they'll replace the unit.

usually when the etm is going out there should be some chk engine light or message...

It could be your Mass Air flow sensor too.

I don't think there was a recall here in Australia, but i can't be to sure because i only have the car for a few months, and to add to the problem i bought it from auction.

But do you know the "other" website site whether i can check if it is still under warranty?

try Matts Volvo Forum , or something like that, they seem a bit
more knowledgable than this site. When ours went there was no other indication,
no check engine light etc, As it gets worse the rpms drifted up and down at idle
and a slight touch of the pedal might lauch the car. Sound familiar?

Volvo dealer can check your vin# to see if it's had the recall re-programming done. I have a 2000 and had a surge at idle problem, as well as rpm drop at idle too. Cleaned my ETM/throttle body and it runs like a dream. Was all carboned up so the butterfly was restricting airflow. When the computer sensed that, it would surge. Scared the hell out of me a few times as it lurched forward in drive!

Yes 'Subdewd' it sounds very familiar it would unexpectadly and sometimes very rapidly. I will check here in Australia whether there was any recalls and see if they can accept it even though it has been a while. Thanks for the help 'Subdewd' and 'kevmcrae'.
